No. 6 Pioneers Sweep Series with RedHawks

Three players record multiple points as the Pioneers win 6-2

DENVER – The No. 6 University of Denver hockey team swept its weekend series against the Miami RedHawks as 12 different Pioneers recorded at least a point in a 6-2 win on Saturday night at Magness Arena.

Senior Jack Devine and junior Aidan Thompson each had two points apiece with a goal and an assist, and senior captain Carter King also had a multi-point night with two helpers. Sophomores Sam Harris, Eric Pohlkamp and Kieran Cebrian also put the puck into the MU net.

"I just loved our compete throughout the whole game here tonight," said Richard and Kitzia Goodman Hockey Head Coach David Carle. "Didn't think we took our foot off the gas. Obviously had a push the first five minutes, but I thought we weathered that storm really nicely, pushed back and really didn't look back from there."

Goaltender Matt Davis made 10 saves as DU only allowed 12 shots against. The senior earned his 50th career victory with Denver, becoming the 13th netminder to reach the half-century mark in the program's history.

In his 100th career game, junior Jared Wright scored the first goal for the Pioneers (17-5-0, 6-4-0 NCHC) at 8:56 of the opening period off a pass from behind the net by classmate Rieger Lorenz.

Miami (3-15-2, 0-10-0 NCHC) was called for four penalties throughout the night, and DU capitalized on the opportunity by scoring two power play goals.  Devine tallied on the man advantage with 3:02 left in the first period and Harris also netted one while a man-up at 1:04 of the second.

DU led 2-0 after the first period and had a 4-0 lead in the middle frame before the teams traded goals the rest of the night.

Michael Quinn and Casper Nassen were the only RedHawks that were able to get shots past Davis throughout this contest.

Miami goalminder Bruno Bruveris saved 36-of-42 shots DU sent his way.

The Pioneers won the series opener on Friday by a 4-1 score and are now unbeaten in their last 16 games (15-0-1) against the RedHawks.

UP NEXT: Denver heads out onto its last bye week of the regular season and resumes its schedule on Jan. 24-25 at Minnesota Duluth.

QUOTABLES
Richard and Kitzia Goodman Hockey Head Coach David Carle
On the top line: "I think when they're hanging onto the puck, their talent level allows them to break people down. It's hard to get the puck off their stick when they're connected and when they're moving their feet. I thought they did a lot of that tonight, and it was nice to see them get rewarded."

On the Lorenz-Cebrian-Wright line: "It's no secret, I mean they've played really well throughout the year. The offensive production maybe hasn't been what they thought it would be, but they're doing things the right way, and it's just continuing to believe that if they play to that standard and how they can play, they will generate as things get harder.

Senior Forward Carter King
On the sweep: "It was a good weekend, getting some confidence back throughout the lineup. I think we had a lot of puck possession, and guys started to get a little more comfortable with the puck on their stick and having that possession game came back, so I think it's big we got that back."

On whether the power play helped with confidence for tonight: "Yeah, I mean, penalties or not, I think it was just more the confidence. I think it's just having that puck on your stick, holding the puck and getting your eyes up and finding each other. I was really happy with our ability to do that this weekend."

Junior Forward Jared Wright
On his goal and the weekend overall: "It was nice to pop one in. I think it was just important our line started getting going there. [Keiran Cebrian] at the end, that was huge for him. But I haven't been disappointed with our line. We're playing the right way and playing Denver hockey, but it's huge for our group just to get a sweep. We haven't swept I believe since NoDak [North Dakota], so it's big, big points for us there, and the NCHC, and hopefully we keep it going."

On his line's confidence level: "I think we've always been confident, even though the scoring hasn't been there. I mean, we've been playing together since the second half of last year, and obviously winning the national championship. So it's just continuing to play the right way. And when we play the right way, it'll result in getting production."

Junior Forward Aidan Thompson
On the working power plays: "I think just quick puck handling. We got a lot of great guys on the power play. Sammy [Harris] does a great job screening up fronts. Zeev [Buium], [Carter] King, [Jack] Devine all snap here quick, so that helps out a lot. We've been successful, so we keep going."

On Jack Devine: "I think he is just a super unselfish player. I think he could score many more goals if he wanted to. If there is a guy wide open back door, it is a way higher percentage, so he is just going to slide it back door, and I think that shows. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think he is leading the country in assists, so I think he is doing a great job—he should just keep doing what he is doing because he is doing a fantastic job."
