No. 16 Denver Gymnastics Set for Big 12 Opener Against West Virginia

DU to host annual “My Ribbon, My Reason” meet on Sunday in Magness Arena

MY RIBBON, MY REASON:
Sunday marks Denver's now-annual "My Ribbon, My Reason" meet in which the DU gymnasts will raise awareness for their individual chosen cause(s) by wearing colored hair ribbons that correspond with said cause(s). DU has partnered with campus and local organizations in coordination with the gymnasts' causes, and fans are encouraged to arrive to Magness Arena early to visit with each organization on the concourse before and during the meet.

LAST TIME OUT:
Denver opened the week with its first road trip of the year, visiting Arkansas for a tri meet with Texas Woman's on Monday, January 20, and placing second overall with a 196.325. DU gymnasts grabbed at least a share of three event titles with junior Mila Brusch winning on vault with a career high-tying 9.900, senior Mia Hebinck tying atop the bars podium with a 9.850, and graduate student Bella Mabanta claiming the outright win on beam with a 9.925.
In total, Denver went 28-for-28 on the day when including exhibition performances and had all 14 of its available student-athletes make at least one lineup appearance.
EYE ON THE RANKINGS:
National rankings were released the morning before DU's meet at Arkansas, meaning the competition did not factor into the current rankings. Because Denver did not compete during the official Week 3 of the season, its season averages remained unchanged from the previous week's rankings.
Despite not competing during Week 3, Denver holds the No. 16 spot in the rankings and remains in the top 15 on three events, led by a No. 5 ranking on bars and a second top-10 ranking on vault. Three DU gymnasts hold individual rankings: graduate student Rylie Mundell on bars (tie-No. 6) and vault (tie-No. 16), sophomore Madison Ulrich on bars (No. 18) and junior Cecilia Cooley on floor (tie-No. 24).
Both DU's meet at Arkansas and Sunday's meet against West Virginia will be included in the next set of rankings to be released on Monday, January 27. Denver already raised its overall season average to 196.200 following the January 20 meet at Arkansas.
QUICK HITS:
West Virginia hosted Kent State on January 16 for the team's first home meet of 2025, placing second with a 192.325. WVU gymnasts Anna Leigh and Trinity Macy shared the bars title, and Leigh added another podium finish with a tie for second on floor.
Denver holds a 22-6 all-time record against WVU after the teams most recently met at the 2024 Big 12 Gymnastics Championship at Oklahoma on March 23, 2024, where DU finished second overall (197.975) and West Virginia was fifth (195.125). WVU last competed in Denver on February 12, 2023, in a 197.125-195.755 DU head-to-head win.

Denver finishes January with its second of three consecutive Big 12 Conference meets when it travels to Arizona on Friday, January 31.
DU returns home to Magness arena for the first of back-to-back home meets on Saturday, February 8, against BYU.
