No. 17 Denver Gymnastics Travels to No. 20 Arizona for Big 12 Meet

DU closes January with top-20 match up in first Big 12 road meet of 2025

WHAT: Denver's first Big 12 Conference road meet

LAST TIME OUT:
Denver opened Big 12 Conference competition when it earned a 195.975-194.100 win over West Virginia at home on Sunday, January 26. DU gymnasts combined to win at least a share of all five individual titles, led by graduate student Rylie Mundell in the all-around and on vault.
In the meet, DU posted its best score so far this year on floor (49.275), doing so in a rebound performance following a shaky beam lineup in the rotation prior.
EYE ON THE RANKINGS:
After competing twice during Week 4 with its trip to Arkansas on January 20 and its home meet against West Virginia on January 26, DU moved to No. 17 nationally in the Road to Nationals rankings released on Monday. Denver maintained its top-15 rankings on vault, bars and floor, again led by its No. 8 ranking on bars.
DU increased its season averages week-over-week overall, as well as on beam and floor. On beam alone, the team improved by three quarters of a tenth from where it sat in the Week 3 rankings.
QUICK HITS:
Arizona is coming off a season-best 196.650 win over in-state rival and Big 12 Conference opponent Arizona State (195.725) on January 26. The Wildcasts are led in part by Emily Mueller, who scored a 39.425 to win the all-around and earn Big 12 Conference Gymnast of the Week honors.
Denver is 9-19-1 all-time against Arizona but has won four of the last five meetings – with the fifth meeting being a tie at 195.850 at UA on March 15, 2015. The teams last met at the 2023 NCAA Regional Second Round in Denver with DU finishing ahead of Arizona, 197.450-196.975. Denver's last trip to Tucson was January 6, 2018, in a 195.775-195.425 DU win.
This will be the first time Denver and Arizona will meet as members of the Big 12 Conference.

- Friday is Denver's first official Big 12 Conference away meet as 2025 marks the first year that the Big 12 has sponsored a traditional conference schedule for gymnastics.
- This will also be the first year that a regular-season Big 12 Championship will be awarded, given to the team(s) with the best win-loss record against Big 12 opponents during the regular-season.
- With her two titles against West Virginia, Mundell now owns 40 career titles and is four away from moving into Denver's top 10 all-time.
- Though no DU gymnasts are in the Week 4 individual national, rankings, five are within a quarter tenth of the top 25 across multiple events:
- Junior Kiley Rorich and sophomore Madison Ulrich are each just .007 away from the top 25 on bars.
- Mundell is also close on bars, coming up .019 shy.
- Sophomore Maddison Reidenbach and junior Cecilia Cooley are both approximately a quarter tenth away on vault and floor, respectively.
- Arizona is DU's fourth opponent so far to appear in the top 25 nationally at the time of the meet, joining then-No. 13 Michigan, then-No. 5 Missouri and then-No. 17 Arkansas.
- In total, nine of the top 25 teams (as of Week 4's ranking released on January 27) appear on Denver's schedule including upcoming meets against No. 4 Utah and No. 10 Oregon State.
- Denver will take part in Arizona's "Cause Night," wearing ribbons in support of causes for which they are raising awareness. DU hosted its own version of the meet with its "My Ribbon, My Reason" competition on January 26.
