Denver Returns to East Coast for Trip to Pittsburgh Tuesday

The Pioneers will play their second nationally televised games in as many Tuesdays when Denver makes its yearly trip to Pittsburgh

DENVER – The University of Denver men's soccer team will return to the east coast for the middle trip of three this month when the Pioneers take on Pittsburgh on Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET/5 p.m. MT. The match will be broadcast nationally on ACC Network.

DENVER VS. PITTSBURGH SERIES HISTORY:
Pittsburgh holds a 3-0-1 series lead with all four meetings taking place in Pittsburgh between 2019 and 2024. Denver's lone result came in October of 2022, a 2-2 draw. The match features two head coaches that know eachother well. DU's Jamie Franks and Pitt assistant Zack Schilawski played for Pitt head coach Jay Vidovich at Wake Forest.

LAST TIME OUT:
Bryce Willoughby and Kyle McGowan scored on either side of halftime, and Denver kept its first cleansheet since the season opener on August 21 to earn a 2-0 win over previously unbeaten Delaware. With the win, Denver is tied with Kansas City atop the Summit League table. FULL RECAP 

THE FRANKS FOUNDATION

  • Jack and Sheila Weinberg Head Men's Soccer Coach Jamie Franks is in his 11th season as the bench boss and his 14th with the program overall in 2025.
  • Franks and his staff were named the 2016 National Coaching Staff of the Year after taking Denver to its first College Cup appearance.
  • Franks is 131-45-33 in his time as a head coach, 166-62-41 in his time at Denver overall and 265-89-58 in his time as a player and a coach in college soccer.
  • Franks is 9-8-2 in the NCAA Tournament at DU (9-7-1 as HC). As a player and coach, Franks is 25-12-4 in the NCAAs.
  • In addition to National Coaching Staff of the Year, Franks is a five-time Summit League Coach of the Year (2015-18, 2023).
  • Franks was the youngest head coach in Division I soccer when he was hired in 2015, and the second youngest in 2016 when he took the program to the College Cup.
  • Franks led the Pioneers to back-to-back unbeaten regular seasons in his first two years in charge, the first program to go unbeaten in back-to-back regular seasons since Clemson in 1977-78.
  • In his first 10 seasons, Denver qualified for the NCAA Tournament nine times and received a bye into the second round four times. Denver has played in the second round now seven times.
  • Franks won the national championship as a player with Wake Forest in 2007 in Cary, defeating Ohio State 2-1 in the final.
  • Franks made his sixth College Cup appearance combined as a player and coach last season.

DENVER AND THE NEW POWER 4

  • Five matches on Denver's season-opening six-match road swing were against the Power-4 in 2024, with the other coming against the deep BIG EAST Conference (Creighton).
  • Denver's most wins against the power conferences came in 2016 when the Pios won four against members of the premier conferences. DU has had multiple wins in three seasons, winning three times against the P4 in 2024 and twice in 2022. 
  • The Pioneers 2-1 win over Cal and 1-0 win over No. 5 Stanford in the season opening weekend last season were Denver's ninth and 10th P4 wins, and its 11th under Franks came against [14] Indiana in the NCAA Round of 16.
  • In the second year of the new Power-4, the Pios will battle four P4 teams in the regular season in 2025. 
  • Denver enters the match 1-1 against the P4 this season.

TOP-10 SINCE 2015

  • Denver is 131-45-33 since the start of the 2015 season.
  • That record is good for sixth in the country in wins during that span, behind Wake Forest (158), Indiana (149), Clemson (147), Georgetown (140), Stanford (137).
  • Of the 27 teams that had at least 100 wins in that span entering the year, Denver has the seventh-fewest losses at 45.
  • Six of Denver's opponents are among the 27 that began the year with 100 wins since the start of the 2015 season.

RECORD BOOK WATCH

  • Career Shutouts: Isaac Nehme broke the career shutouts record in the Pios 2024 NCAA Second Round win with his 27th, and now has 31.
  • Career Goalkeeper Wins: Isaac Nehme broke the career goalkeeper wins record on August 31 vs. SIUE (2-1), capturing his 43rd victory to pass Nick Gardner (2014-18). Nehme now has 48.
  • Career Saves: Isaac Nehme has 170 career saves to sit fourth in Denver's DI history in career saves. Nehme is 24 saves behind Parker Jarvis (1999-01) for third on the list.
  • Career Matches Started: Isaac Nehme and Trevor Wright enter Tuesday having made 76 career starts. With a start Tuesday, the Pioneer duo will sit together in a tie for third in program history, six behind the record held by Scott DeVoss (2015-18 | 83).
  • Career Matches Played: With his next appearance, Dylan Akau will tie Reagan Dunk (2013-16) and Liam Johnson (2018-22) for 8th in program history at 79. Wright and Nehme's next appearance will tie them with Kenny Akamatsu and Sam Bassett for 13th at 77 apps.

  • Denver is 152-11-19 when scoring first since head coach Jamie Franks joined the staff as an assistant in 2012.
  • Since Franks took over as the head coach in 2015, the Pioneers are 117-9-13 when scoring first.
