BOSTON – The No. 7 Denver Pioneers hockey team ships out to Boston this weekend as the squad takes on the No. 9 Eagles of Boston College on Friday and the Northeastern Huskies on Saturday.
Both games will be broadcast on ESPN+. Puck drops are set for 5 p.m. MT each night. The University of Denver alumni office is hosting two pregame parties on both Friday and Saturday night in Boston.

The Pios are 2-1-1 this season following a split at Lindenwood last weekend. Denver came up just short in Friday's game, with a final score of 4-3.
Hagen Burrows scored twice in the effort for his first career multi-goal game, and goaltender
Paxton Geisel made 29 saves.
On Saturday, the Pioneers shut out Lindenwood 4-0. Four different Denver players hit the back of the net, including
Sam Harris, who also tallied an assist in the contest. Burrows and
Eric Pohlkamp earned two helpers apiece. Freshman netminder
Quentin Miller stopped all 19 of Lindenwood's shots to earn his first career victory and shutout. DU scored five unanswered goals to end the weekend.
Boston College stands at 2-2-1 this season after a 5-1 win at RPI last Friday. On the weekend prior, Oct. 9-10, the Eagles defeated and tied the Gophers in the road series at Minnesota. Their lone loss of the season was at the hands of Quinnipiac on Oct. 3 with a final mark of 4-3.
DU holds the all-time series lead at 22-16-0, including a mark of 6-5-0 at Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill. Denver and Boston College are facing off for the third straight season, with the Pioneers winning each of the last three matchups. The teams last met on March 30 in the 2025 NCAA Northeast Regional Final, with the Pioneers winning 3-1 to secure their second-straight berth to the Frozen Four.
That game in last year's NCAA Tournament in Manchester, New Hampshire, was a rematch of the 2024 National Championship Game that DU won 2-0 in St. Paul, Minnesota. The Pioneers' victory marked the first time the defending champion won the title rematch in the national tournament, with the previous NCAA winners going 0-for-7 in such contests.
Denver last played at Conte Forum on Oct. 21, 2023, winning 4-3 after
Carter King scored the game-winning goal with 2:02 left in the third period.
The Pioneers will be making their final trip on Saturday to Matthews Arena—the oldest multi-purpose arena in North America—which is closing its doors after the New Year. Denver last played at Matthews on Oct. 16, 2004, winning 4-2. The program also won the 1960 national championship in the building, defeating Boston University and Michigan Tech en route to its second-ever title.
Northeastern is 2-1-0 this season, with the Huskies defeating No. 11 UMass 4-2 last Friday. The following day, they took on Harvard in an exhibition showdown and fell 4-2.
The Pios lead the all-time series over NU with an overall record of 17-5-0, including a 6-3-0 mark in Boston. Last season, the Pios hosted the Huskies at Magness Arena in a two-game series on Oct. 18-19 and swept the set with scores of 5-2 each night. In the game on Oct. 18, five different Pioneers secured a goal, while
Boston Buckberger and Burrows earned two apples each. The following night, DU raised its 2024 national championship banner to the rafters before King contributed two goals and two assists and
Aidan Thompson earned four helpers in the victory.
Denver went 5-1-0 in contests against the Hockey East Association last season, and DU owns a 9-2-0 mark against teams from the northeast-based conference since the start of 2023-24.
The Pioneers are wrapping up a season-long four-game road swing this weekend and finally return to Magness Arena for homecoming weekend on Oct. 31-Nov. 1 when they take on Alaska Anchorage.
LAST TIME OUT: The Pioneers split their weekend series at the Lindenwood Lions, losing 4-3 on Friday before picking up a 4-0 shutout victory on Saturday. DU was making its first-ever trip to LU after hosting the previous four games in the all-time series.
The Lions broke a 2-2 tie in the final minutes of the third period on Friday night before adding an empty-netter in what was eventually the game-winning goal.
Hagen Burrows tallied his second of the night in the final minute of play, but DU wasn't able to tie the contest. Goalie
Paxton Geisel made 29 saves while making consecutive starts for the first time in his career.
Denver had four different goal scorers on Saturday and goaltender

MILLER TIME: Goaltender
Quentin Miller won his first career game and earned his first career shutout with a 19-save effort in Denver's 4-0 victory at Lindenwood on Saturday. He is unbeaten (1-0-1) to start his collegiate career after denying 23-of-24 shots in a 1-1 tie at Air Force in the season opener on Oct. 10.
Posting a shutout for your first NCAA win hasn't been an uncommon occurrence in recent years for the Pioneers.
Matt Davis recorded a clean sheet in his first career start on Oct. 16, 2021 vs. Air Force (25 saves) and
Freddie Halyk did the same in his win against Air Force on Oct. 28, 2023 (24 saves).
BURROWS BURIES IT: Sophomore
Hagen Burrows recorded multiple points in each game last weekend at Lindenwood and is on a career-long three-game point streak. He produced his first career two-goal outing on Friday before registering a pair of assists on Saturday for his fourth career contest with multiple points. It was the first time that he has registered multiple points in back-to-back outings.
The forward has already doubled his goal total from a season ago, as he has tallied two goals and three assists through four games. He had nine points on one goal and eight assists in 39 outings as a freshman in 2024-25, with him not scoring his first marker until March 15 in Game 2 of the NCHC Quarterfinals against Colorado College.
CASWELL CONNECTING: Freshman
Clarke Caswell has begun his collegiate career with points in each of game this season and ranks second on the team with five points. He has two goals and three assists during his four-game point streak. Caswell recorded his first career multi-point outing with two helpers on Oct. 11 vs. Bentley.
The Brandon, Manitoba, native presently ranks tied for sixth in the nation in goals by freshmen and is tied for 11th in overall scoring among his class members.

PENALTY KILL DELIVERS: Denver has not allowed a power-play goal this season and is 11-for-11 on the penalty kill in 2025-26. The Pioneers nullified four man disadvantages chances last Friday at Lindenwood and went 3-for-3 while a man-down on Saturday.
The Pioneers finished with an 81.7-percent success rate on the kill last season and went 7-for-9 on man disadvantages during the 2025 NCAA Tournament. DU killed off 17 straight penalties across five games last year from Oct. 5-25, 2024.
SHOTS FIRED: Denver ranks second in the country by averaging 44.8 shots per game and outshot Lindenwood 49-19 on Saturday. The Pios outshot the Lions 19-4 in the second period on Saturday, with their plus-15 shot differential the highest in a single period this season. DU's four shots against in the second period on Saturday vs. LU was also a season-best mark.
The Pioneers began the season on Oct. 10 by outshooting the Air Force Falcons 59-24, the team's most shots on goal since firing 66 against Lake Superior State on Oct. 20, 2017. Denver's plus-35 shot differential was its highest since having a plus-36 differential on Dec. 2, 2022 vs. ASU (56-20), and the 22 shots on goal in the third were its most in a single frame since having 23 in the second period on Nov 3, 2023 vs. Colorado College.
Denver's season high for shots on goal last year were 46 on Nov. 8, 2024 vs. Lindenwood, and the previous time the Pios had 50 or more shots on net was when they had 56 on Dec. 2, 2022 vs. Arizona State.
NOTABLES:
- Denver was making its first-ever trip to play at Lindenwood and is now to 5-1-0 in the all-time series.
- The Pioneers' goal 1:17 into the game on Saturday was its fastest to start a contest this season and the fastest since Jack Devine tallied 16 seconds after the opening faceoff on the March 9, 2024 at Colorado College. Last season's fastest tally to start a game was 1:29 by Boston Buckberger on March 21 vs. Arizona State in the NCHC Frozen Faceoff Semifinals.
- DU blocked a season-high 12 shots on Saturday and won 55.4 percent of its faceoffs, also its best rate of the year.
- Clarke Caswell tallied his first career game-winning goal on Saturday.
- James Reeder (seven) and Kieran Cebrian (five) both had career highs in shots on Saturday, while Hagen Burrows' six shots on Saturday were also a personal best.
- Hagen Burrows' second goal on Friday came with an extra attacker on the ice, Denver's first such goal of the season. The Pioneers had four pulled-goalie goals in 2024-25.
- Brendan McMorrow made his collegiate debut on Friday after missing the start of the season with an upper-body injury.
- Freshman Kyle Chyzowski recorded his first NCAA point with an assist on Sam Harris' goal on Friday.
- Goaltender Paxton Geisel started on Friday after recording a shutout on Oct. 11 against Bentley. It was the first time in his career that he played consecutive games.
- Geisel had his career-long shutout streak of 96:32 end in the second period on Friday. The clean sheet stretched across three games dating back to Feb. 3, 2024 vs. Western Michigan.
- Eric Pohlkamp had his four-game point streak (4g/2a) dating back to Mach 30 in the NCAA Regional Final vs. Boston College end on Friday.
ON THE ROAD: Denver wraps up a four-game road swing this weekend in Boston with matchups against Boston College on Friday and Northeastern on Saturday. The Pioneers began their season-long trip last weekend at Lindenwood on Oct. 17-18.
DU will spend most of the first half of the season on the road, as it will play five of its first six games and 10 of the first 14 contests away from Magness Arena. Overall, the Pios will play 12 of their first 19 outings on the road before the Holiday Break and starting a season-long four-game homestand after the New Year.
FAREWELL MATTHEWS ARENA: The Pioneers will be playing for the final time at historic Matthews Arena (formerly Boston Arena), which is the world's oldest multi-purpose arena and is in its final year of existence. The rink, which first opened on April 25, 1910 and has been home to Northeastern hockey almost every year since 1930 (except from 1943-46), has had foundation issues and will be demolished in 2026 to make away for a new arena. Matthews was initial home of the Beanpot Tournament and the original home of the NHL Boston Bruins.
Denver is 9-3 all-time at Matthews Arena, which includes wins over host Boston University (6-4) in the national seminal (6-4) and Michigan Tech in the championship game (5-3) to claim the 1960 national title.
The Pioneers beat the Eastern National Team 7-2 at then-Boston Arena on Jan. 2, 1967 and is 6-3 all-time at the rink against Northeastern. The Pios' last visit was on Oct. 16, 2004, earning their first win of that season with a 4-2 score before going on to win their second consecutive national title the ensuing spring.
Northeastern will play 13 home games at Matthews, with the final matchup on Dec. 13 being against cross-town rival and former arena-tenant Boston University (1918-1943, 1945-1971).

SCOUTING THE EAGLES: Boston College has a 2-1-1 record to start the season and is coming off a 5-1 victory at RPI last Friday in Troy, New York … The Eagles, who are ranked No. 9 in both national media polls, began the campaign with a 4-3 loss on Oct. 3 vs. Quinnipiac before going 1-0-1 in a matchup at Minnesota, winning 3-1 and tying 2-2 on Oct. 9-10. UM won the end-of-game shootout 2-0 at the end of the tie. James Hagens leads the team in scoring with five points on two goals and three assists, while Drew Letourneau, Drew Fortescue and Ryan Conmy have also tallied twice this year. HISTORY VS. NORTHEASTERN: DU and Northeastern are set to play a series for the second-straight year after the Huskies visited Magness Arena for two contests last season. The Pioneers swept that home set with a pair of 5-2 victories on Oct. 18-19, 2024. Prior to that matchup, it had been nearly 20 years since the teams faced off, with NU visiting Magness for the Denver Cup on Jan. 2, 2005. Denver has won nine games in a row in the series since Nov. 25, 1994 and sports all-time marks of 17-5-0 overall and 10-2-0 on home ice. The Pioneers are visiting Matthews Arena in Boston to play Northeastern for the 10th and final time, as the oldest arena in North America is closing its doors for good after the New Year. DU has a 6-3 record at Northeastern, with wins in each of its last three contests there. The Pios last visited Matthews Arena on Oct. 16, 2004, winning 4-2. SCOUTING THE HUSKIES: Northeastern is 2-1-0 to start the season and has played single-game weekends in the opening weeks of the campaign. The Huskies began Hockey East play last Friday with a 4-2 win at then-No. 11 UMass, but they did lose 4-2 in an exhibition against Harvard on Saturday at home. NU started the year with a 6-4 victory against Holy Cross on Oct. 4 but lost 2-1 at Army on Oct. 10. Northeastern is playing 13 games at Matthews Arena in the fall before having its home games be held at various college rinks around the Boston area in the spring. Joe Connor leads the team with three goals and is tied for first with four points with Dylan Hryckowian (2g/2a) and Tyler Fukakusa (0g/4a). Lawton Zacher has started all three games in goal for the Huskies and owns a 2-1-0 record, 2.69 goals-against average and .899 save percentage.
NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS: The Pioneers will play 11 non-conference games this season, with the team making trips to Boston, St. Louis and down to Colorado Springs. Bentley, Alaska Anchorage and Maine will visit Magness Arena during the year, and DU will host Minnesota in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game at Ball Arena in downtown Denver on Nov. 29.
The Pioneers began the campaign on the road at Air Force on Oct. 10 before hosting Bentley the next night on Oct. 11 in the home opener. DU heads out on the road for back-to-back weekends, facing Lindenwood on Oct. 17-18 before playing Boston College and Northeastern on Oct. 24-25 in its final road non-league games of the year.
After visiting Alaska Anchorage and Maine last season, Denver welcomes both the Seawolves and Black Bears to Colorado in 2025-26. DU hosts UAA for Homecoming Weekend on Oct. 31-Nov. 1 before taking on Maine after the New Year on Jan. 2-3.
The Pioneers went 13-1-0 against non-NCHC opponents during the 2024-25 season and 5-1-0 against teams from Hockey East Association. Denver defeated Providence and Boston College in the 2025 NCAA Tournament owns a 9-2-0 record in their contests vs. Hockey East over the previous two seasons (2023-2025).
Overall, DU owns a 13-0-1 mark at home in non-NCHC contests since Jan. 7, 2023 vs. Alaska Fairbanks. The Pios are 28-4-2 overall against non-conference opponents since the start of 2023-24.
PIONEERS IN THE POLLS: Denver ranks at No. 7 in the country in both the USCHO.com and USA Hockey media polls that were released on Monday. The Pioneers began the year at No. 4 in each ranking's preseason list and was at No. 5 last week.
The NCHC is tied with the Big Ten and Hockey East for the most schools ranked in the top 10 (three) and its five total ranked squads are third-most in the nation. Joining the Pioneers in the rankings are league foes Western Michigan at No. 2/2, North Dakota at No. 8/8, Colorado College at No. 16/17 and Minnesota Duluth joining the poll for the first time this year at No. 18/19. Arizona State dropped out of the poll but still received votes, along with Miami and St. Cloud State.
PIONEERS HEADING TO SWITZERLAND FOR SPENGLER CUP: Defenseman
Eric Pohlkamp was named last Thursday to the U.S. Collegiate Select team that will compete at the 2025 Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland, from Dec. 26-31. The junior was among the first 10 players added to the roster, which will feature 25 players that will represent NCAA hockey at the prestigious international tournament.
All returning First and Second Team All-Americans received an automatic invitation to the team. The remainder of the roster, which will include representation from all six conferences, will be constructed by the USCS coaching staff and organizing committee, with guidance from select NHL scouts.
Pohlkamp won't be the only Pioneer at the tournament, as Associate Director of Sports Medicine
Aaron Leu was named as the head athletic trainer of the U.S. College Team over the summer. Leu is in his 22nd year at DU and has worked with the men's ice hockey program as the head athletic trainer for 21 of those seasons.
This will be the second time an American-based select team has taken part in the Spengler Cup, following a U.S. squad that won the tournament in 1988. Two Denver players have suited up for Team Canada at the Spengler Cup in recent years while a student-athlete, with
Massimo Rizzo doing so in 2023 and
Ian Mitchell in 2019.
BALL ARENA SHOWDOWN COMING IN NOVEMBER: The University of Denver will host the Minnesota Golden Gophers at NHL's Ball Arena on Saturday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. MT in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game. The initial announcement of the Pioneers hosting was on April 15, 2024 and the exact date was finalized on July 16, 2025 following the release of the Colorado Avalanche NHL schedule.
The DU hockey program will serve as the host of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game for the third time in its history and will be playing in the contest for the fourth time. DU previously hosted the games at Magness Arena on Oct. 11, 2008 vs. Notre Dame (5-2 win) and Dec. 29, 2012 vs. Boston University (6-0 win). The Pioneers previously played Minnesota in the USHHOF Game on Oct. 9, 2004 at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn. (5-2 loss).
Denver will be playing its second-ever game at Ball Arena since the building first opened in 1999. The Pioneers defeated in-state rival Colorado College 2-0 in their first regular-season game at the arena on Jan. 27, 2023 in front of a crowd of 17,952—the highest attended indoor hockey game in the state of Colorado in DU history.
It will be a double-header of hockey at Ball Arena on Nov. 29 as the Avalanche hosts the Montreal Canadiens earlier that day at Ball Arena at 1 p.m. MT.
