Denver Men’s Tennis Sweeps Weekly Summit League Awards

Sancho Arbizu/Coats collect doubles nod while Sancho Arbizu adds singles honor

DENVER – University of Denver men's tennis players Theo Coats and Daniel Sancho Arbizu together swept the weekly Summit League men's tennis awards, the Summit League announced on Tuesday.

As a doubles tandem, they were named the Kwik Star Summit League Doubles Peak Team of the Week while Sancho Arbizu also collected the Kwik Star Summit League Peak Performer of the Week nod.

Together in doubles, Sancho Arbizu/Coats won both of their matches for DU last weekend, beginning with a 6-4 victory against Utah State and then backing it up with a 6-3 win against Jacksonville State. In both cases, DU went on to earn a 5-2 overall victory as a team. With the wins, the senior/freshman duo moved to 9-1 in dual matches so far and are riding an eight-match unbeaten streak.

In singles, Sancho Arbizu also went undefeated on the weekend, adding two more straight-sets wins at No. 1 singles for DU – his ninth and 10th wins in two sets so far in 2025. He began with a 6-3 6-2 win on February 21 to clinch Denver's win against Utah State and then added a 6-2 6-4 win on February 23 against Montana State. After the weekend, he owns a 10-2 record in singles in dual matches.

The Kwik Star Summit League Doubles Peak Team of the Week is new in 2025, and Coats/Sancho Arbizu have earned the award twice (also doing so in Week 2). Sancho Arbizu has also now collected the Kwik Star Summit League Peak Performer of the Week twice this year and is the second men's player to win both the singles and doubles award in the same week (also: Drake's Will Ecklund in Week 4). Together, Coats and Sancho Arbizu have accounted for four total Summit League weekly awards this season.

Sancho Arbizu now owns a combined nine weekly Summit League honors in his career while Coats has two.

No. 70-ranked Denver heads back on the road for two matches at Power-4 opponents, playing at BYU on Friday, February 28, and then at No. 56 Utah on Sunday, March 2.
