Denver Women’s Soccer Match Versus Texas A&M Ruled No Contest

DU led 1-0 before lightning delay in the 68th minute; match not to be resumed due to excessive delay

DENVER – The University of Denver women's soccer team (1-0-3, 0-0-0 Summit) held a 1-0 lead in the 68th minute over Texas A&M, but the match was declared a no contest when play was suspended due to lightning and did not resume within the allotted time outlined by the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Soccer rules.

Prior to the delay, DU redshirt senior Samantha Dreiling had given Denver a 1-0 lead with a converted penalty kick in the 10th minute. In the 60th minute, Texas A&M had gone down to 10 women after a red card was issued.

The match will not be resumed or completed.

With the no-contest call, no team result is determined, and all statistics are voided.

NCAA DIVISION I MEN'S & WOMEN'S SOCCER RULE BOOK – Inclement Weather Policy
7.7.3 If the conditions leading to a suspended game persist and the game is not resumed, the game shall be considered "no contest" if it has not progressed to 70 minutes. A "no contest" does not count, and all normal statistics are nullified except for violent behavior II, fighting and assault on referee red cards, which are subject to associated penalties in Rule 12.

7.8.3 Once a game has been started and suspended, it must be restarted not later than three hours after the originally scheduled start time unless mutually agreed upon before the start of the game by the teams or determined by the governing sports authority. (See Page 7.) The teams and/or governing sports authority may agree to resume a suspended game at a later date.

SIGNIFICANT STATS:
  • S. Dreiling's goal would have been her team-leading third of the season and DU's first converted penalty kick since October 13, 2024, when Ella Frost scored the game winner in a 2-1 victory against North Dakota State.
  • Redshirt junior goalkeeper Alina Santos had what would have been three saves.
  • Redshirt junior Hannah Tate led DU with three shots including one on goal.
  • DU was looking for its second consecutive victory over the Aggies after defeating Texas A&M, 3-2, in College Station, Texas, last season.
  • This is the first match in Denver's Division I history known to be ruled a no contest.
FIRST HALF:
10' | After drawing a foul inside the 18 and having a video review confirm the call, S. Dreiling stepped to the spot and buried her shot to give Denver the early lead.

20' | Freshman Lilly Lund tried to convert a second chance of DU's second corner of the match but had her shot from the top of the box blocked.

27' | Following a second video review, the Aggies were awarded a penalty due to a DU handball inside the box. A&M's Leah Pirro took the kick as Santos dove to the correct side, but the Denver keeper did not need to make a touch on the ball after Pirro's attempt went wide of the post.

43' | On the second of two DU corners within three minutes, Tate successfully connected with the service but sent her header high.

SECOND HALF:
56' | Texas A&M got a quality look on a header following the first corner of the second half, but Santos was able to make the easy grab.

60' | A&M's Kat Campbell was issued a red card for a double yellow off a dangerous tackle, leaving the Aggies down a woman for the rest of the match.

WHAT'S NEXT:
Denver will return to the pitch when it welcomes Southern Utah to University of Denver Soccer Stadium on Sunday, August 31, at 12 p.m. MT. The match, too, will be the first of a DU Soccer doubleheader with the men taking on SIUE at 3 p.m. MT.
