DENVER – The University of Denver women's tennis team earned its second win of the season, doing so with a 7-0 sweep of Miami (Ohio) on Saturday afternoon at Denver Tennis Park.
With just two games lost in the two complete doubles matches, Denver headed into singles play with a 1-0 lead. Five of the six singles matches then wrapped up in two sets in favor of the Pioneers with the sixth match ending after a Miami (OH) retirement before the start of a third set.
Doubles:
Denver started off doubles with a dominant 6-0 win at No. 3 from senior
Zoe Adkins and sophomore
Natálie Cinková – an improvement over their 6-1 win in their first match together a week ago. DU's No. 1 duo again featured seniors
Hana Bečirovič Novak and
Marley Lambert, and the Pioneers secured a 6-2 win to clinch the point for Denver.
The No. 2 match was on serve at 4-3 when it was abandoned.
Singles:
Senior
Louise Wikander posted two 6-1 wins to earn DU's first singles point of the day. She won the match's first five games and again jumped out to a break lead early in the second set before reaching 5-1 and serving it out.
In her second collegiate dual appearance, freshman
Yunfei Cai again lost three or fewer games on her way to a 6-2 6-1 win at No. 5 singles. In both sets, she claimed a 4-1 lead on her way to easily closing them out.
Lambert earned the clinching point in the No. 2 spot, rallying from a break down in the second set on her way to a straight-sets win. She traded breaks midway through the first set before reclaiming the lead to 4-3 and using two holds of serve to claim it, 6-4. After going down 0-2 to begin the second set, she broke back to level things at 2-2 and then took her own break lead again at 4-3 before serving it out as she did in the first.
Cinková kept momentum going with a win in two sets at No. 4 singles. A late break gave her a 7-5 win in the opening frame, and she followed it up with another break early in the second as she turned a 3-1 lead into 5-2 and then served it out for 6-3.
For the second time to begin her NCAA dual career, freshman
Ruby Hansen used a win in a second-set tiebreak on her way to a No. 6 singles win. This time, she did so in a rally after dropping the first set and facing a 1-4 deficit in the second set. A couple breaks later in her favor, she found herself in the breaker where she also was down, 2-4, at the changeover. Five points won in the next six gave her the set and forced what would have been a third set, but her opponent retired before the final set could start.
The day's most competitive singles match featured Adkins in her first dual singles match as a Pioneer. She traded breaks in the first set before adding another late break to take it, 7-5, and also claimed the first break of the second set on her way to a 3-1 lead. Her opponent got back level at 3-3, but an Adkins break again in the ninth game proved to be the turning point with the DU senior serving it out in the following game.
