Coats, Davies, Rovai, Tarrio Ponte seek NCAA individual berths at annual tournament on October 6-10
DENVER – Four University of Denver men's tennis players will take part in the 2026 ITA Mountain Regional Championships, hosted by BYU, on October 6-10.
Juniors Theo Coats and Samuel Rovai, and sophomores Dylan Davies and Ander Tarrio Ponte are set to play in both singles and doubles at the event.
On the line are automatic berths to the 2026 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships, set for November 17-22 in Athens, Georgia. The two singles finalists and the doubles champion from this week's ITA regional tournament will secure automatic spots in the NCAA field.
All four Pioneers have earned automatic spots in the main singles and doubles draws, and thus will not need to take part in qualifying. In singles, two Pioneers earned seeds: Tarrio Ponte at No. 10 and Rovai at No. 14. Denver's student-athletes will begin their ITA regionals with round of 64 matches against players from Air Force, BYU and Montana.
Denver's doubles teams will be Davies/Tarrio Ponte and Coats/Rovai, both of which earned seeds at No. 7 and No. 9, respectively, and will receive byes in the round of 64. Their first matches will come in the round of 32 with Davies/Tarrio Ponte to take on the winner of a match between pairings from Idaho State and Montana while Coats/Rovai will face a team from either Northern Arizona or UNLV.
The daily schedule and start times for the tournament have not yet been announced.
In addition to Denver, the ITA Mountain Regional consists of Air Force, Boise State, BYU, Idaho, Idaho State, Montana, Montana State, Nevada, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Northern Arizona, UNLV, Utah, Utah State and Weber State.
At last year's ITA Mountain Regionals, a trio of Pioneers advanced to the singles quarterfinals including both Coats and Rovai – each doing so in what was their first career appearance at the tournament.
This will mark the ITA Mountain Regional Championships debuts for Davies and Tarrio Ponte. It was also be Tarrio Ponte's official NCAA debut after he arrived on campus midway through the spring 2026 dual season. Davies, too, arrived in March, 2026, and sat out the spring dual season but made his collegiate debut at the 2026 Bedford Cup in the Mountains in September.
Denver has won a combined 13 ITA regional titles as an NCAA Division I program, most recently when Daniel Sancho Arbizu won an all-DU singles final in 2024, which sent Sancho Arbizu and Raffaello Papajcik to the NCAA DI Singles Championship as the region's two automatic qualifiers. In total, four Pioneers have combined to win six ITA regional singles titles.
In doubles, DU owns seven ITA regional championships with the most recent titles coming in back-to-back years from the duo of James Davis and Matt Summers in 2019 and 2021 (with the 2020 tournament canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic).
The 2026 ITA Mountain Regional Championships is the second fall tournament for Denver, though it will be the first tournament of the season for Coats, Rovai and Tarrio Ponte. Davies made his season debut at the Bedford Cup in the Mountains on September 18-20, racking up three wins apiece in singles and doubles.
Coming up on DU's fall schedule will three hidden-dual style events, beginning with Denver's annual home tournament, the Colorado Cup, at Denver Tennis Park on October 30 – November 1. The month of November will then feature back-to-back tournaments at Grand Canyon and LMU on November 6-8 and November 13-15, respectively.
If selected, some Pioneers may also play at the ITA Sectional Championships in Tempe, Arizona, on November 5-8, which also serves as an individual qualifying event for the NCAA National Championships.
DU's winter dual schedule will be announced later this fall.
