The Pioneers will fly home Monday before returning to California Friday night to take on UCLA
STANFORD, Calif. – The [RV/20] University of Denver men's soccer program got an early opener, but [9/10] Stanford controlled the run of play in a 3-1 Cardinal win over the Pioneers on Sunday night at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium.

Significant Stats:
Bryce Willoughby's opener was his first of the season and the 15th of his career.
Willoughby became the 10th Pioneer in the program's Division I history to score 15 career goals.
Willoughby's career point total rose up to 39 with the opening goal, tying him with Kellan Christensen for 13th in the program's DI history.
Key Moments:
6' In the first real moment of the game, Bryce Willoughby turned over Stanford's defensive midfield just inside the Pioneers attacking half. Willoughby took his first touch forward and blew by the Stanford back line at pace. The Stanford keeper came out to try to narrow the angle, but Willoughby slid it by the oncoming Cardinal player to open the scoring.
18' Stanford had a flurry of shots in the opening 20 minutes, but its best chance came off the foot of Eric Frintu, but Frintu didn't get all of his attempt from outside the box, and Alex Hohl was able to dive easily to his left to keep it out.
24' With Hohl out of his goal attempting to punch out a cross, Trevor Islam had a shot at the equalizer cleared off the line by Grant Lund to keep the Pioneers in-front.
31' Hohl's fourth save of the night came from Jack Pymm's attempt from outside of the box, but the rocket was saved comfortably by the freshman keeper.
34' On a quick counter, Kyle McGowan drew a foul and the match's first yellow card in a dangerous area just outside the box, but his free kick was blocked in-front and the Cardinal cleared its lines.
42' Stanford challenged a play in the penalty area that was ruled a foul on Hohl and a penalty to the Cardinal. Jack and Sheila Weinberg Head Men's Soccer Coach Jamie Franks challenged the challenge for a foul earlier in the play, but the penalty decision was upheld. Jack Pymm converted from the spot to level things at 1-1.
45' Denver had the best look at the third goal in the first half when Ryan Mackay rose up for a header off a late corner, but his attempt was cleared off the line by the near-post defender and time expired.
50' Stanford had the first quality chance of the second half when Pymm had a shot blocked in-front and Timothy Fortier followed up on the rebound, but Hohl made his first save of the second half to keep things level.
62' Denver was called for a handball that was originally called in the area, but after video review the foul was ruled to be just outside the area. Pymm's ninth shot of the night was blocked by the wall, and then Stanford was called for a foul on the rebound, and Denver cleared.
73' Logan Tsopanoglou gave the home side its first advantage of the night in the 73rd minute when he beat Hohl from a tight angle, smashing his attempt inside the far post.
78' Tsopanoglou doubled the Stanford lead when he took advantage of miscommunication in the back between Grant Lund and Hohl. Jayden Fitzgerald Boes got in-between the Denver center back and goalkeeper, and slid a pass across to Tsopanoglou to slid his brace into the empty net.
87' Timothy Fortier appeared to make it 4-1, but a foul in the build-up to the goal was spotted after video review, to keep the match at 3-1.

Denver will fly home on Monday night before returning to the west coast next weekend, starting with a date at UCLA on Friday night. Opening kickoff is set for 8 p.m. MT, and will be broadcast on BTN+.
