Denver Opens WCC Play with Road Result at [19/11] San Diego

The Pioneers earn their first point on the road this season, opening the West Coast Conference calendar with a point splitter at nationally-ranked San Diego
DENVER – The University of Denver men's soccer program and [19/11] San Diego played to a scoreless draw in both teams' West Coast Conference opener on Saturday night at Torero Stadium.
Notes:
With the result, Denver took a road point off last year's WCC champions in the Pioneers conference debut. San Diego has won at least a share of each of the last four West Coast Conference championships.
Freshman goalkeeper Alex Hohl kept the second cleansheet of his career, making six saves in the draw.
Saturday's result moved Denver to 19-25-11 against ranked opponents under Jack and Sheila Weinberg Head Men's Soccer Coach Jamie Franks, including 9-17-7 in true road matches.
Following Saturday night's match, Denver's RPI moved to 66th in the country, and its strength of schedule sits at second in the national rankings.Â
How it Happened:
16' After a quiet opening quarter hour from both sides, San Diego got the first shot on target of the night, a header by Iain Wagner that was saved comfortably by Alex Hohl.
25' Denver started to build a bit of sustained pressure and earned its first corner of the night when Dominic Kallay received a pull back from Erik Collins at the top of the box, but Kallay's shot was blocked in-front and in behind for the first corner of the night for either side.
27' Bryce Willoughby got in behind the San Diego back four and slid a shot past the keeper into the back of the net, but he started his run slightly early and was flagged offside.
29' USD's Samy Kanaan volleyed a near-post cross just outside Hohl's six-yard box, but Hohl positioned his body well to keep things scoreless at the half hour mark of the conference opener.
49' Wagner forced Hohl's best save of the night early in the second half after a bit of build-up off a Denver turnover led to a few passes outside of the box to setup the strike of Wagner. The shot was tipped over the bar and out for a corner.
60' Taj Eagleston was slipped in, in the middle of Denver's defensive 18, but Hohl went down to a slide and kicked away the attempt on goal for his fifth save of the night.
73' On the counter, Hudson Tate picked out the run of Ethan Orchard, who was open for an attempt on top of the 18, but his shot sailed over the bar and out for a goal kick.
78' Willoughby got on the end of a Masino corner on the back post, but it was blocked by a Torero defender, and out for another corner. Â
82' A set play on Denver's fourth corner of the night fell to the feet of Kallay at the top of the box, but he got under his attempt and put it over the bar.

Denver will return home for its only stretch of back-to-back home matches this season when the Pioneers welcome LMU to the University of Denver Soccer Stadium next Saturday. Opening kickoff is set for 6 p.m. MT, and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+. Next week's game is both Camp Reunion night and Campus Appreciation Night, and the student-athletes will sign autographs after the match. Â
