Mount St. Mary's Rally Thwarts Pioneers

EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 19) -- Mount St. Mary's rallied from a 6-0 deficit to post a 13-12 women's lacrosse victory over the Pioneers on Sunday, March 19. The win was the first of the season for the Mountaineers (1-2) while the Pioneers fall to 1-4 overall.

Denver jumped out to an early six-goal lead by getting markers from six different players. Mount St. Mary's rallied to narrow the Pioneer advantage to 6-5 at halftime then pulled even less than two minutes into the second half. Mariana Spry scored to snap the Moutaineers' six-goal outbusrt and give Denver a one-goal edge but Mount St. Mary's added four straight goals over an 11-minute span of the second half to take a 11-7 edge.

The Pioneers closed to within one (11-10) with three unanswered goals, including a pair by Kim Bodick. The two teams traded goals the rest of the way with Spry scoring the game's final tally at 6:45 of the second half. The Pioneers had a chance to tie the game late, but Kim Bodick's free position shot hit the pipe and rolled along the goal line before being scooped up by Mount St. Mary's goalkeeper Kathryn Harrington.

Spry led the Pioneers with three goals while Bodick, Dominique Cook and Averill Hovey added two tallies apiece. Mount St. Mary's Amy Harris notched a game-high four goals. Denver's Sarah Hazard made seven saves in goal while Mount St. Mary's goalkeepers Harrington and Gryken combined for 11 saves.

The Pioneers return home for a pair of weekend games. Denver hosts Maryland-Baltimore County on Friday and welcomes Ohio State to the Mile High City on Sunday.
