DENVER (Mar. 5) - Notre Dame reeled six unanswered first-half goals en route to a 18-7 win over host Denver in the Pioneers' home opener this afternoon. Denver falls to 0-2 on the year with the defeat.
The Pioneers trailed by a 5-4 margin 10 minutes into the first half after junior Kim Bodick scored her second goal of the afternoon at the 20:10 mark. The Fighting Irish then got the game's next half-dozen tallies from six different players over a 17-minute span of the opening half before Denver's Sarah James snapped the Notre Dame run with a marker 1:36 prior to the break. The Fighting Irish sealed the game by scoring the first five goals of the second half.
Notre Dame's Lael O' Shaughnessy (four goals and one assist) and Danielle Shearer (two goals and three assists) were the game's top scorers while James paced the Pioneers with four goals. Fighting Irish goaltenders Tara Durkin and Carrie Marshall combined to make 17 saves while Denver netminders Sarah Hazard and Katie Harwood teamed to make 10 saves.
The Pioneers return to action on Friday, March 10, when host crosstown rival Regis. Game time is set for 4 p.m. MST.
