DENVER (April 21) - The University of Denver women's lacrosse team unleashed a flurry of goals on Division III Whittier College in rolling to a 20-2 win Friday night at Pioneer Field. With the win, the Pioneers (3-10) break a four-game losing streak.
Freshman Mariana Spry (Nashua, N.H.) led the scoring barrage with five goals in the first seven minutes of play. She finished with a team-high seven on the night to raise her season total to 22, second-highest on the team. Junior Erin Evans (Mercer Island, Wash.) finished scored Denver's last three first-half goals to put the Pioneers ahead by a whopping 12-0 margin at the half. She finished the game with four tallies. A total of 10 Pioneers scored goals in the game, including freshman Amy Willis (Baltimore, Md.) who earned her first collegiate goal.
Sophomore Sarah Hazard (Owings Mills, Md.) quarterbacked a relentless Pioneer defense, saving both of Whitter's shots in the first half before giving way to freshman Katie Harwood (Winnetka, Ill.). Harwood allowed both of Whitter's goals and also notched five saves.
Whittier held Denver's leading goal-scorer, junior Kim Bodick (New Canaa, Conn.) without a goal on the night.
The Pioneers conclude their 2000 season next Wednesday, April 26 against Colorado College. Senior Night festivities are set for 7 p.m. at Pioneer Field.
