Women's Lacrosse Opens Season With 14-1 Loss

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The University of Denver women's lacrosse team got on board first, but Davidson College scored 14 unanswered goals as the Wildcats pulled away with a 14-1 win in both teams' season opener. The loss marked the first game for Abby Burbank as Denver's head coach.

Freshman attacker Patience Baldwin (Baltimore, Md. / Vermont Academy) got Denver on the scoreboard first, as she tallied the game's first goal two and a half minutes into play. Sophomore defender Mariana Spry (Nashua, N.H. / Nashua HS) earned the assist.

The Wildcats responded quickly, tying the game 29 seconds later on a goal by Christin Raimondo. Davidson then pulled ahead for good at the 24:15 mark of the opening period when Rachel Bowen scored. When the first period had ended, Davidson led just 3-1.

Sarah Otto scored her first of six goals with 24:13 to play, starting a six-goal Davidson binge over the next eight minutes to stretch the margin to 9-1.

Although she was bombarded in the second half, Denver netminder Sarah Hazard (Owings Mills, Md. / Maryvale Prep) played a solid game, registering 23 saves.

"Our first half was much better than our second," said Burbank. "I thought the two teams were pretty evenly marked in the first half. There weren't a lot of shots on goal because there was so much happening in the midfield. Davidson gained a lot of momentum in the second half off their fastbreak, and Otto and Stephanie Hunter created a lot of transition opportunities. We had some sloppy fundamental play in the second half, but some of our defenders, like Shannon Jarrett, McKenzie Egender and Meghan Burke, did a good job."

The Pioneers are back in action this Thursday, Feb. 22, when Denver travels across town to face Regis. Face-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
