Women's Lacrosse Gets First Win of Season, 18-2

DENVER -- Senior attacker Kim Bodick (New Canaan, Conn. / New Canaan HS / Loyola [Md.] College) scored six goals on seven shots to lead the University of Denver women's lacrosse team to an 18-2 win over host Regis on Thursday afternoon in Denver. The win is the first for the Pioneers (1-1) under new head coach Abby Burbank.

Denver started the scoring just 19 seconds into the game when freshman Noemi Hites (Pleasanton, Calif. / Monte Vista HS) took a feed from freshman attacker Patience Baldwin (Baltimore, Md. / Vermont Academy) and flipped the ball past Regis goalkeeper Kathryn Oliver. Bodick scored her first goal less than 4:00 later with an assist from junior midfielder Dominique Cook (Morrison, Colo. / Colorado Academy).

The Rangers (0-1) halved the lead with their first goal 1:30 later, but Bodick scored again just four minutes later to start the rout. The Pioneers led 8-1 at the half on the strength of three goals from Bodick.

Regis scored its final goal 43 seconds into the second half before Cook tallied her second marker of the afternoon. With 24:00 left, Bodick started a four-goal Pioneer scoring binge over the next 4:56 to keep the Pioneers comfortably ahead.

The Pioneers scored on half of their 36 shots, and the defense stood firm by holding the Rangers to just 10 shots. Junior netminder Sarah Hazard (Owings Mills, Md. / Maryvale Prep) made just five saves with the staunch defensive effort turned in by the Pioneers.

"With this being just our second game of the season, we're still working on team concepts and fundamentals, and I was happy with the job we did of running some set plays, and communicating and moving around," said Burbank. "Regis is an improved team. It took a lot of effort for us to play as well as we did today."

The Denver women are back in action next Saturday, March 3, when the Pioneers play their home-opener against Stanford. Face-off at the Denver Lacrosse Field - located immediately west of the Ritchie Center - is set for 1 p.m.
