EAST LANSING, Mich. - Susan Westbrock paced a balance University of Dayton attack with 16 kills to lead the Flyers to a 3-1 (31-33, 30-23, 30-21, 30-20) win over the University of Denver in volleyball action Saturday morning at Jenison Field House. The match was the third of the weekend for both teams at the L&L Food Centers / MSU Volleyball Classic.

Senior outside hitter Kellie Savage (Arvada, Colo. / Arvada West HS) led the Pioneers with 12 kills, while senior setter senior setter Clarice Golesh-Burch (Lakewood, Colo. / Mullen HS) added 12 digs and 38 assists to post her second double-double of the season.

The Pioneers forged an early 14-10 lead before Dayton went on a run of its own and took a 17-15 lead. Dayton then pulled ahead and had game point at 29-27 when Denver made its final push. Sophomore right-side hitter Olympia Hughes (Casper, Wyo. / Natrona County HS) placed a perfect dump as the secondary setter to tie the game at 29-all, and Golesh-Burch tipped a dump of her own to win the first game, 33-31.

Dayton had control of game two from the start, getting out to leads of 10-7 and 17-14. After the Pioneers fought back to tie the game at 19-all, the Flyers went on a 5-0 run to take a 24-19 lead. Denver scored another point before Dayton scored six of the last nine points to win, 30-23.

Game three saw the Flyers continue their solid play, as Dayton held a three-point lead throughout most of the game. Denver committed 10 attack errors in posting a .000 hitting percentage for the game.

After taking an early lead before the Pioneers climbed back to a 12-11 lead, the Flyers extended their cushion in game four, scoring seven of the last nine points of the game to clinch the match, 30-20.

"We weren't as ready as we should have been today," said head coach Beth Kuwata. "There are no excuses for how we played today. We were very inconsistent. Dayton dug a lot of balls, and when a team does that, we have a hard time."

The Pioneers finish tournament play later this afternoon when they face the host Spartans at 1 p.m. EDT.
