Women's Lacrosse Drops Season Opener, 5-3

Feb. 15, 2002

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson came back from a 2-0 halftime deficit to post a 5-3 win over Denver in non-conference women's lacrosse action Friday night in both teams' season opener.

The Pioneers (0-1) took an early lead on a pair of goals from sophomore midfielder Patience Baldwin (Baltimore, Md. / Vermont Academy). The first goal came at the 22:57 mark and her second with 2:37 to play in the first stanza. The first half was a real defensive battle that ended with the Pioneers holding a 2-0 advantage.

The second half took a turn in favor of the Wildcats as Loren Seaton scored with 24:19 to play. Seaton then tied the score three minutes later on an unassisted goal.

The Wildcats took the lead on a Sarah Otto goal which came off a pass from Seaton. Denver tied the score up just over halfway through the final period with a marker by freshman Melissa Holecheck (Hurlock, Md. / Sts. Peter & Paul HS), but Otto scored her second goal of the game to put Davidson ahead for good.

Christin Raimondo scored the final goal of the game with 11:03 to play.

Senior goaltender Sarah Hazard (Owings Mills, Md. / Maryvale Prep) had 13 saves for the Pioneers, while Becca Nussbaum made 10 saves for the Wildcats.

"We controlled the first half, but we couldn't sustain that momentum in the second half," said head coach Abby Burbank. "We're young, though, and that's a common trait of young teams. I'm definitely encouraged that we only allowed Davidson 13 shots after allowing 37 last year [in a 14-1 Davidson win]. To have a game be that low-scoring is phenomenal. We got some great defense from Megan Bader, Patience Baldwin did a great job on the attack, and we got some solid play in front of the net from Sarah Hazard."

The Pioneers continue play this weekend in North Carolina with two days of exhibition play at the South of the Border tournament in Raleigh/Durham.
