Denver, Colo. - - The University of Denver women's lacrosse team (2-2) kicked off their six-game homestand with a decisive 13-8 victory over Mount Saint Mary's (0-2) today at Pioneer Field. Six Pioneers earned multiple points, with junior Patience Baldwin (Baltimore, Md.) and freshman Jovan Drotar (Herndon, Va.) topping the list with three goals each.
The Mount opened up the game's scoring with a goal 3:27 into the first half but the home team soon took charge with a 6-0 run. Baldwin first took the initiative, scoring twice within two minutes at the 19:00 and 17:16 mark. From that point until the end of the first half, four other Pioneers added to Denver's lead. Sophomore Tanya Fuchs (Bay Shore, N.Y.) took advantage of a Mount St. Mary's foul at 11:17 and netted her first goal of the night off a free position opportunity. Just over three minutes later (8:09) senior Mari Spry (Nashua, N.H.) scored to bring the Pioneer lead to 4-1. Drotar and freshman Steph Greenlees (Lake Forest, Ill.) then closed out the scoring in the first stanza with a goal each to give Denver a 6-1 advantage going into the break.
Denver looked to keep the momentum going in the second half with sophomore Crystal Jack (Kingwood, Texas) driving home a shot 11 seconds in (29:49). Forty-five seconds later Greenlees followed suit as she capitalized off a free position opportunity (29:04) to bring the Pioneer lead to 8-1. In danger of watching the game slip away, The Mount picked up their intensity and went toe to toe with Denver for the remainder of the half, edging out the Pioneers 7-5 in goals. The Crimson and Gold wouldn't break under the pressure though, and goals from Spry, Drotar, Fuchs and Baldwin kept the game close.
Denver will next see action on Friday (March 7) as they host California at 7 p.m.
