Denver Clinches Final Game of Tournament, 1-0

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Denver women's soccer team shutout Richmond 1-0, in its final game of the First Tennessee Classic in Knoxville, Tenn. Freshman Lleane Grimditch (Bouder, Colo.) scored the Pioneers lone goal and the win puts Denver at 4-1 on the season.
The Pioneers came into the first half equally matched with their opponents. Richmond and Denver both had scoring opportunities, but neither capitalized on the chances. Freshman goalkeeper Danielle Wiley (Littleton, Colo.) held the Spiders scoreless and recorded two saves in the first half.
The game remained scoreless until the 74th minute of the game when Grimditch scored for the second time in the tournament. After a tremendous performance against Charlotte, Grimditch sped past Richmond defenders and found herself on a breakaway. She netted a goal in the high left corner of the box for her second tally of tournament and season.
"Lleane took over the game in the second half," head coach Jeff Hooker said. "She took it upon herself to get the job done, whether it was setting up the goals or scoring. She is a remarkable player that has a huge impact on the game."
Junior Diana Brunkhardt (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) provided Denver with another spectacular performance. She aided the Pioneers with an assist and shot on goal.
Wiley tallied four saves on the day and her first shutout. Her record improves to 2-1 on the season.
"After the second half we did a much better job of controlling the ball," Hooker said. "This win was a combination of veterans and newcomers. Maggie really led the team today and the five freshmen that started were sensational. This is a good blend and hopefully shows the future of Denver soccer."
The Pioneers return to action in the Colorado Women's Classic in Boulder, Colo., when they take on San Jose State at 2 p.m. Tournament action continues on Sunday, September 21, at 10 a.m. against Seton Hall.
