PITTSBURGH - The University of Denver women's lacrosse team lost a tough match to the Duquesne Dukes, 15-5, on St. Patrick's Day on Rooney Field. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but was postponed due to inclement weather.
Senior midfielder Patience Baldwin (Baltimore, Md.) led Denver with three goals. Junior Crystal Jack (Kingwood, Texas) and Tara Bourdelaise (Gambrillis, Md.) led the team with four groundballs and junior defender Beth Cordova (Littleton, Colo.) added a team-high three caused turnovers. Junior goalkeeper Steph Schneider (Leesburg, Va.) suffered the loss in goal. She recorded four saves on 25 shots.
The Dukes wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as Courtney Tamasitis netted an unassisted score 2:45 into the contest and scored again at 8:14 to aid in Duquesne holding a 6-0 lead with just under 13 minutes off the clock. Ginger Flocco hit three of her goals in that span with a free position score at 6:01 and unassisted goals at 9:58 and 12:49. Laura App hit an unassisted goal at 10:49 as well. Denver first got on the board at 15:45 as Baldwin hit a free position goal and followed suite with two unassisted scores. Duquesne held an 11-3 lead at the half.
Denver opened the second frame scoring with just 1:45 off the clock with an unassisted goal from sophomore midfielder Steph Greenlees (Lake Forest, Ill.). Kelly Mulford scored for the Dukes at 2:46 for a 13-4 lead before App hit two goals at 3:31 and 11:27 to up the lead to a 15-4 edge. Flocco concluded the Dukes' scoring at 27:47, but the Pioneers ended the game's scoring with a free position goal at 28:20 from junior defender Lindsay Robinson (Overland Park, Kan.).
Duquesne's Flocco led all scorers with four goals, including the game-winner, and two assists for six points. Sarah Pacini got her fourth win of the season recording 12 saves on 26 shots.
The Pioneers continue their east coast spring break trip on Fri., March 19, when the Pioneers travel to Emmitsburgh, Md. to face-off against the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers at 1:30 p.m. MT.
