DENVER - Junior Crystal Jack (Kingwood, Texas), sophomore Steph Greenlees (Lake Forest, Ill.) and freshman Kate Broderick (Chantilly, Va.) each scored four goals apiece to lead the University of Denver women's lacrosse team over St. Mary's (CA) 17-8, in a non-conference game at Pioneer Field on Fri., April 16. Senior Patience Baldwin (Baltimore, Md.) also added three goals and two assists in the win. The victory improves Denver's record to 5-7 on the season, while the Gaels fall to 3-9.
The Gaels struck first but Denver responded with three quick goals from the combination of Broderick and Greenlees. St. Mary's Jessie Freer added a tally before the Pioneers' Baldwin and Jack with goals of their own to put the score at 5-2 with 8:44 remaining in the first half.
Denver continued to dominate on offense after the Gaels scored two goals within one minute. The Pioneers finished the half with a 4-0 run, capped by Jack's second and third goals of the game to give Denver a 9-4 advantage at the end of the first half.
St. Mary's opened the second half with two quick goals from Colette Spencer and Jackie Spencer. Denver responded with four unanswered goals from four different Pioneers to put the score at 13-6 with 22:36 remaining in the game.
The Gaels would only score two more goals the rest of the contest, thanks to Denver's defense. Five different Pioneers scored in the final half, with Greenlees, Broderick and freshman Jessica Rae Lodders (Castle Rock, Colo.) each tallying two goals.
Junior goalie Steph Schneider (Leesburg, Va.) made 20 saves in the win, while the Gael's Katie Augustine made eight. St. Mary's outshot Denver 40-38.
The Pioneers return to action on Fri., April 23, when they travel to New York to face Syracuse at 5:30 p.m. Denver will continue its competition in New York when it takes on St. Bonaventure on Sun., April 25 at 10 a.m. MT.
