Boulder, Colo.- The University of Denver women's soccer team snapped its two-game losing streak by defeating Pittsburgh, 2-0 in the opener of the Colorado Soccer Classic. Junior Lleane Grimditch (Boulder, Colo.) scored both goals for the Pioneers. Denver improves to 2-3-1, while Pittsburgh falls to 2-3-1. Goalkeeper Dani Wiley (Littleton, Colo.) recorded the shutout.
The Pioneers started the game with lots of offense, recording 12 shots in the first half, but couldn't out one past Pittsburgh goalkeeper, Jamie Pelusi. Denver received lots of help on the offensive end. Sophomore Jenna Billingsley (Littleton, Colo.) recorded three shots and freshman Emily Hines (Albuquerque, N.M.) recorded two shots, but despite the flurry of offense, Denver went into halftime tied, 0-0 with the Panthers.
In the second half all the Pioneers needed was 10 minutes to get on the board. Grimditch, back on the field after missing several games with injury, took a pass from Billingsley and buried in the back of the net to give Denver the lead. Grimditch teamed with sophomore Taryn Hemmings (Greeley, Colo.) for 10 of the Pioneers 19 shots, to lead the Pioneer offense. Grimditch scored again in the 84th minute to give the Pioneers the 2-0 win. Wiley made five saves in the match and recorded her second shutout of the season.
"This was a quality win for us," head coach Jeff Hooker said. "We picked up our offense and were able to put some shots in the net. We need to do the things we did today and hopefully we'll have the same result on Sunday. "
The Pioneers return to action on Sunday, Sept. 18 when they face Detroit. The match is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. at Colorado's Prentup Field.
