DENVER - The University of Denver men's basketball team's comeback fell short, falling to South Dakota State 67-56 on Sunday afternoon at Hamilton Gymnasium.
South Dakota State (2-7) led by as many as 18 points in the second half, but the Pioneers brought it back to within eight points with a minute left.
Senior forward Antonio Porch (Denver, Colo.) reached a season high with 13 points, including five in the final minute and a half, and Tyler Bullock (Lincoln, Neb.) added 11 points and a game-high four assists.
Junior center Adam Tanner (Melbourne, Australia) made his first appearance as a Pioneer halfway through the first half and contributed seven points, a team-high six rebounds and two assists. Tanner was out the first seven games of the season with a fractured left arm.
The Pioneers start the game strong, building a six-point lead after seven minutes of play. But shooting woes plagued Denver (1-7), which shot 27 percent (9-for-34) in the second half and 31 percent (18-for-58) for the game.
South Dakota State forward Matt Cadwell led all players with 18 points and 11 rebounds. The Jackrabbits hit 48 percent (26-for-54) of their shots in the game, including 50 percent from 3-point range (5-for-10). Including Cadwell, South Dakota State had three players scoring in double digits.
The Pioneers head to Laramie to face Wyoming on Wednesday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. The game can be heard live on KCKK 1600 AM.
