DENVER - The No. 52 University of Denver women's tennis team improved to 5-6 on the season with a 5-2 win over North Texas Sunday at Stapleton Tennis Pavilion. It was Denver's first conference match of the season and the second weekend sweep of the season.
"With this weekend marking our first two outdoor matches of the season, I'm pleased with the results," said head coach Dana Young. "We showed a great deal of fight and determination in both wins over the weekend." The Pioneers improved to 14-19 in doubles, capturing the point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Suzana Maksovic (Helsingborg, Sweden) and Annette Aksdal (Oslo, Norway) took DU's first victory at the No. 1 spot, defeating Megan Schmulbach and Sammie Moreton 8-5. At No. 3 doubles, rookies Kaja Smole (Ljubljana, Slovenia) and Lorinda Boothman (Naples, Fla.) moved to 2-0 as a team with an 8-3 win over Mean Green's Lynley Wasson and Sara Giles.
In singles, Rachel Sackmaster (Alpharetta, Ga.) cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Moreton of North Texas at No. 3 singles. Aksdal also made quick work of Wasson at No. 2 singles, winning 6-1, 6-2. The Mean Green scored a point at No. 4 singles as Schmulbach defeated Kyla Iwinski (Marietta, Ga.) 6-2, 6-2. However, it would not be enough to overcome Denver, as the match was clenched by Smole at the No. 6 spot, who delivered a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Giles.
In other results, Boothman lost to Aziza Aba Butain 2-6, 6-3, 10-8 and No. 59 Maksovic defeated Ina Wieding 6-2, 7-5 in the No. 1 singles spot.
Up next, Denver returns to Stapleton next weekend, hosting UTEP March 10.
