TULSA, Oklahoma – The No. 61-ranked University of Denver women's tennis team (10-7, 2-0 Summit) fell in its final non-conference match of the season, 4-1, at Tulsa on Friday afternoon.
The doubles point came down to the No. 3 match with the hosts going up, 1-0. Freshman
Yunfei Cai leveled the score board at 1-1 with a dominant win at No. 6 singles, though Tulsa eased went on to win three straight singles matches to get the overall victory.
Doubles:
All three doubles matches finished with identical 6-1 scores. The Hurricane started play off with a win at the No. 1 spot before DU seniors
Claudia Martinez de Velasco and
Louise Wikander kept DU in the battle for the first point, winning at the No. 2 position after breaking twice in the first five games. Tulsa clinched the point a few moments later in the third and final match.
Singles:
With her team-best 12
th dual-match singles win of the season, Cai pulled Denver even overall and did so after losing only two total games – her fifth win in 2026 with two or fewer games dropped. She won the first five games on her way to her first 6-1 set of the day. The two players held to begin the second set, but Cai won six games in a row to add another 6-1 set to her day.
Tulsa went up, 3-1, after taking the Nos. 3 and 4 matches in straight sets before clinching the dual at No. 5 singles – though Denver senior
Hana Bečirovič Novak gave it a fight in three sets – winning the final four games of the first set to claim it, 6-2. Tulsa's Coral Valle got a break midway through the second set and eventually won it, 6-4, to force a final set where she followed a similar pattern to seal it, 6-3.
The top two singles matches went unfinished, both in third sets. Wikander had started a rally after dropping the first set to win the second, 6-3, and was tied at 1-1 early in the final set. Fellow senior
Marley Lambert had also made it to a third set after dropping the first and facing a break deficit in the second set. From down 3-5, Lambert won four in a row to grab it, 7-5. She was down in a break in the third set but did not have the chance to break back before the match was abandoned.
