DENVER - The University of Denver women's soccer team won their third consecutive match, this one against Sun Belt Conference opponent Florida Atlantic Friday, Sept. 29 at Pioneer Field. The Pioneers got started quickly with a goal by junior Taryn Hemmings (Greeley, Colo.) in the first minute of the game, paving the way for a 5-1 DU win.
"It was a great goal," said head coach Jeff Hooker. "It was a world class goal."
The Pioneers (7-2-1) got goals from four different players following Hemmings' goal. Senior Lleane Grimditch (Boulder, Colo.), senior Holly Huppert (Littleton, Colo.), freshman Katie Culp (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Mariah Johnston (Littleton, Colo.) all scored for Denver which won its first home match following nine road matched to begin the season.
"We're clicking on all cylinders right now," said Hooker. "Everyone's moving the ball around well and we also have good movement off the ball."
Senior Dani Wiley (Littleton, Colo.) earned the win, giving up just one goal on two shots from Florida Atlantic. She has given up just five goals on the season.
Junior Alicia Tirelli scored Florida Atlantic's lone goal of the game at the 48th minute. The goal was assisted by junior Monique Cabrera.
It was Denver's second consecutive five goal game, as DU defeated Louisiana Monroe 5-0 last Sunday, Sept. 24.
The Pioneers will continue SBC play at home on Sunday, Oct. 1 against Florida International at 11 a.m.
