Senior Kristie Leggio (Bay Shore, N.Y.) scored eight points in her final game at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium on Saturday afternoon, as the No. 16-ranked University of Denver women's lacrosse team edged Cal, 14-12. Freshman Ali Flury (Arnold, Md.) added four goals and sophomore Karen Morton (Adelaide, Australia) recorded a hat trick.
Leggio had five goals in the game, pushing her career total to 126, third on DU's all-time goals list. Leggio's three assists gives her 76 in her career, tops all-time at DU, for a total of 202 points, second on the career leader list.
Leggio got DU (15-2, 5-0 MPSF) on the board first, but the Pioneers quickly found themselves in a 4-2 hole to Cal (6-8, 2-3 MPSF). The Pioneers rattled off four unanswered goals to take a 6-4 lead late in the first half. Cal got within one goal but Leggio scored DU's final goal of the half to give the Pioneers a 7-5 lead at intermission.
Cal started the second half on a 2-0 run to tie the game, 7-7. DU maintained either a one goal lead or were knotted up with the Bears until Flury tallied a goal at the 19:01 mark, giving DU a 10-9 lead. Leggio pushed the Pioneers back to a two goal lead but on a free position shot Cal was back within one.
DU led by as many as three goals midway through the second half. Cal could get back within two goals but not get any closer the rest of the way. Junior goalkeeper Becky Childs (Phoenix, Md.) recorded five saves in the game, all in the second half.
Sophomore Steph Coyne (Baltimore, Md.) had three points and junior Megan Carver (Baltimore, Md.) had a goal.
Prior to the start of the game, DU honored the six seniors on the team: Kate Broderick, Liz Dierdorff, Sarajane Goodfellow, Jessica Lodders, Leggio and Alyssa Passivia.
The Pioneers head to the MPSF Championships in Davis, Calif., May 4-6, and have earned a first round bye in the tournament by clinching the No. 1 seed.
