St. Mary's Snaps Denver's Undefeated Season

MORAGA, Calif. The No. 21 Pioneers lost their first match of the season today, falling to No. 52 St. Mary’s 4-3 on the road.

 

Denver picked up only one doubles win, losing the doubles point for the second consecutive match. Annette Aksdal (Oslo, Norway) and Bhavani Tirumurti (Jakarta, Indonesia) notched the only Pioneer doubles victory by downing Alex Poorta and Claire Soper 8-5 at No. 3.

 

The Pioneers were only able to win three of the four singles matches needed to clinch the victory. No. 77 Mallory Voelker (Dousman, Wis.) improved to 15-0 with her defeat of Poorta 7-6, 6-0 at No. 1, Aksdal downed No. 119 Jessica Hoath 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 at No. 2, and Kyla Iwinski (Marietta, Ga.) beat Stef Ordoveza 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6.

 

With the win, St. Mary’s improves to 9-4. The Pioneers earn their first loss of the season and fall to 14-1.

 

DU will return to action Thursday, March 20 against No. 42 Sacramento State at 4:00 p.m. MST.
