Box Score BOISE, Idaho - University of Denver men's basketball sophomore guard Chase Hallam (Mesquite, Texas) had a career-high 26 points on 10-of-12 shooting, but the Pioneers fell 65-52 to Boise State at Taco Bell Arena on Saturday night.
"It comes down to turning the ball over, and they capitalized on it," head coach Joe Scott said. "We're had some bad luck, but we're also making our own bad luck. That said, we came out in the second half and played hard and competed. Overall, I give credit to a good Boise State team."
Denver (1-5) cut the deficit to seven points at 54-47 with 9:11 left in the second half, but a Broncos' steal and Daequon Montreal dunk off an offensive rebound stopped the DU spurt, and the Pioneers never got within two possessions of the Broncos (5-0) again.
Freshman forward Chris Udofia (Irving, Texas) set career highs with seven rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Redshirt sophomore Trevor Noonan (Broomfield, Colo.) tied his season-high with 10 points and his career-high with six rebounds.
"Chris Udofia played extremely well tonight," Scott said. "He competed and worked hard. He's active, and he's all over the place defensively."
The contest remained a one-possession game for the first 14 minutes until Boise State went on a 10-0 run to stretch the lead to 13 points with 4:34 remaining in the first half. Chase Hallam cut the deficit with a 7-1 run by himself before BSU's Paul Noonan hit a three-pointer at the buzzer and sent the Broncos into the half with a 36-26 lead.
Denver shot 55.6 percent (10-of-18) from the field before the break, while out-rebounding the Broncos 12-9. However, DU committed 12 turnovers that led to 16 BSU points, and Boise State hit 54.5 percent (12-of-22) from the field in the first half.
The Broncos (5-0) were led by Robert Arnold's 22 points, and Zack Moritz added 13 points and six rebounds.
The Pioneers return home to take on three-time defending WAC champion Utah State at Magness Arena on Wednesday, Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. MT. The game will be broadcast live on FSN Rocky Mountain, as well as AM 1510 and FM 93.7.
