Pioneers Defeat Broncos, 79-62

Box Score

DENVER - Senior guard Brian Stafford (Walnut Creek, Calif.) scored a game-high 18 points and sophomore forward Chris Udofia (Irving, Texas) chipped in 17 points, as the University of Denver men's basketball team defeated the Boise State Broncos 79-62 at Magness Arena on Saturday afternoon.

"I thought for the most part we played pretty well," head coach Joe Scott said. "Our defense was good. We made them play the way we wanted with the focus on their shooters, but overall I thought our defense was pretty good."

Stafford went 6-for-7 from the field, including 2-for-2 from three-point range, and 4-for-4 from the free throw stripe, while adding three rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block.

The Pioneers (8-2) finished the game with four players in double-figures, as senior forward Justin Coughlin (Yuma, Colo.) scored 11 points and redshirt-senior forward Rob Lewis (Colorado Springs, Colo.) added 10 points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals. Freshman guard Brett Olson (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) led DU with six rebounds, while adding three assists and a blocked shot.

Denver shot 57.1 percent (28-for-49) from the field, including a blistering 71.4 percent (15-for-21) in the first half.

The Pioneers were 53.3 percent (8-for-15) from three-point range and held the Broncos (8-3), who entered the game fifth in the nation with 9.8 three-pointers made per game, to 2-of-10 from beyond the arc with both coming in the final eight minutes of the game.

Denver got out to a fast start, scoring the game's first 11 points. Udofia converted on all four of his attempts in that five-minute span, scoring 11 points just 4:26 into the contest.

DU increased its lead to 15 points with 2:11 left in the first half. Boise State's aggressive play cut the lead at times, but BSU shot 8-for-15 from the free throw line, and a great defensive effort from the Pioneers allowed Denver to take a 36-22 lead into halftime.

Denver's strong shooting carried over into the second half, as six of the Pioneers' second half field goals were three-pointers through 17 minutes of action after the break. Following a 15-4 run, the Broncos were able to cut the DU lead to seven with 2:45 remaining in regulation.

The Pioneers used the final 2:40 to their advantage, going on a 18-8 run to end the game, including a five-point play caused by a Boise State technical foul combined with a conventional three-point play from Lewis.

Boise State was led by Anthony Drmic's 14 points, while Westly Perryman had 12 points and a game-high seven rebounds.
