Pioneers Fall 10-6 to Vermont

DENVER - The University of Denver women's lacrosse fell 10-6 to the University of Vermont Wednesday evening at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.

Junior Lauren Ciccomascolo (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) had a goal and two assists and senior Tulley Stapp (Denver, Colo.) forced three turnovers for Denver (1-6). Junior Ashley Harman (Boyertown, Pa.) and senior Lauren Benner (Arnold, Md.) combined to make nine saves in the loss.

The Pioneers trailed 5-0 to begin the game, but answered the Vermont (2-3) rush with three goals of their own from junior Melissa Maier (Farmingdale, N.Y.), sophomore Alex Befus (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Ciccomascolo. The Catamounts tallied another goal before intermission and Denver trailed 6-3 after the first 30 minutes.

Denver closed the gap to 7-6 midway through the second half, getting goals from freshmen Jenn Etzel (Bel Air, Md.), Annabelle Gilbride (Alexandria, Va.) and Meredith Harris (Middleburg, Va.) while holding Vermont to just one score. The Catamounts quelled the Denver rally with three unanswered goals to end the game.

Vermont outshot DU 31-22 in the game, but Denver won the ground ball battle 15-11. The Catamounts were 1-of-12 on free-position shots and Denver was 1-of-5.

Sydney Moss led Vermont with three goals and two assists. Natalie Jones and Danielle O'Dwyer forced three turnovers each, and Elise Mazurak made seven saves in the win.

The Pioneers continue their home stand, hosting the Boston University Terriers on Saturday, March 19. Game time is set for 1 p.m. MT. Fans can watch the action live on Pioneer Vision, available through DenverPioneers.com, which also will offer live stats.
