MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Denver beat Florida Atlantic 4-2 in the semifinals of the 2011 Sun Belt Shootout late Saturday night at Buck Boldin Tennis Center.
The Pioneers improved to 6-12 with the win, while Florida Atlantic fell to 10-8. Denver will play No. 66 DePaul in the championship on Sunday.
"It feels very good to get two wins over conference opponents," DU head coach Danny Westerman said of the Pioneers who also beat Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday. "I was especially pleased during the FAU match because we played to our potential at every position for the first time all year. We will need another competitive effort Sunday against a good DePaul team."
Denver jumped to a quick 3-0 lead and held on for the 4-2 win. Doubles were not played due to time constraints.
Jens Vorkefeld (Ostercappeln, Germany) beat Daniel Vardag 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3 singles to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead. Alex Clinkenbeard (Loveland, Colo.) made it 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Marc Wakim at No. 5 singles and Yannick Weihs (Guntramsdorf, Austria) made it 3-0 with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Ervin Garibovic at No. 2 singles.
After FAU wins at the No. 6 and No. 1 positions, Andrew Landwerlen (Las Cruces, N.M.) beat Omar El Kheshen 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4 to clinch a berth in the championship.
First serve for the match against the Blue Demons is set for 11 a.m. MT.
