Denver Sweeps San Jose State at Home

Box Score

DENVER - Led by a 15-kill performance from junior Colleen King (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) and an eight-block showing from senior Faimie Kingsley (Brooklyn, N.Y.), the University of Denver volleyball team swept (25-22, 25-18, 25-20) the visiting San Jose Spartans (12-14, 8-8 WAC) on Saturday evening from Hamilton Gymnasium. The win improves the Pioneers to 15-11 overall, 8-7 in league play.

"It was a good match for us," said head coach Jesse Mahoney. "This was one of our better defensive matches. We stuck to our game plan and our scouting report to a tee, which is as good as we've done all year. That really helped us to block and defend at a really high level."

Along with Kings' 15 kills, Kingsley chipped in nine kills, while freshman Michele Swope (Orlando, Fla.) finished with seven kills and four blocks. Setter Frances Carroll (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) led with 35 assists, while libero Kate Acker (Waukesha, Wis.) finished with 18 digs.

Also helping out defensively was senior Lyndi Johnson (Flower Mound, Texas) as she tallied eight digs.

Mary Alice O'Reilly and Krista Miller led the Spartans with nine kills, while setter Michaela Leonard finished with 28 assists.

Up next, the Pioneers travel to San Antonio, Texas, to take on UTSA on Thursday, Nov. 8 at 5:30 p.m. MT. Live stats will be available for fans to follow.
