Box Score ANCHORAGE, Alaska – University of Denver sophomore guard Jalen Love (Wichita, Kan.) scored a team-high 20 points and made three steals, but Pepperdine shot a Great Alaska Shootout-record 71.4 percent from the field to lead the Waves to a 68-56 win over the Pioneers at Sullivan Arena on Friday afternoon.
Junior guard Brett Olson (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) had 10 points and four assists, and junior guard Cam Griffin (San Antonio, Texas) pulled down a game-high nine rebounds while adding eight points for the Pioneers (0-4).
“We had a quick turnaround from last night to today, and obviously Pepperdine did a much better job of being prepared for that,” said head coach Joe Scott. “That falls on me. Going forward, hopefully we can learn from both halves and get back to playing Denver Basketball.”
For the second-straight game, the Pioneers came strong out of the gates, scoring the first five points of the first half. However, Pepperdine shot 71.4 percent (15-of-21) from the floor and took a 38-15 lead into halftime.
The Waves (5-2) again shot 71.4 percent (10-of-14) in the second half, making Pepperdine the first opponent to shoot better than 70 percent against Denver since Colorado State hit 71.1 percent on Dec. 15, 2001.
DU hit 33.9 percent (19-of-56) from the floor in the contest, and out-rebounded the Waves 27-26.
Pepperdine was led by Stacy Davis and Brendan Lane, who had 22 and 12 points, respectively.
Denver concludes the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout on Saturday at 2 p.m. MT, when the Pioneers take on host Alaska Anchorage.
