DENVER - Sophomore Kiki Boone (Cherry Hills, Colo.) tied a school single-game record with 12 draw controls, and sophomore Jill Remenapp (Woodbine, Md.) totaled eight points on two goals and a career-high six assists, leading the University of Denver women's lacrosse team to a 18-7 rout over Fresno State at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Boone's 12 draw controls tied Kate Broadrick's mark, set against Oregon on Feb. 23, 2005, and Remenapp's six assists were one shy of Denver's single-game record.
Redshirt-senior Kara Secora (Denver, Colo.) scored four goals and added two assists, and junior Annabelle Gilbride (Alexandra, Va.) added four goals. Redshirt sophomore goalie Hannah Hook (Arnold, Md.) made seven saves for the Pioneers (6-1) and recorded her first career assist on a second-half goal from Secora.
"It was our first conference game and we haven't played Fresno State at home since our seniors were freshmen," head coach Liza Kelly said. "It's a bummer we couldn't get Kiki one more draw control (to break the record). She has been working really hard to get us the draw controls and keep them in our sticks. Fresno was really feisty with the draws, and Kiki did a nice job of winning the draws."
The Pioneers outshot the Bulldogs 45-16, including a 34-7 advantage in the first half. The Crimson and Gold had a 19-8 advantage in draw controls and a 15-9 advantage in ground balls.
Denver jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but Fresno State (1-3) answered with the next two to tie the game. The Pioneers regrouped and scored eight-straight goals to take a 10-2 lead and led 11-4 at halftime.
The Pioneers scored the first five goals of the second half to jump out to a 16-4 lead, and forced 22 Fresno State turnovers, including six by senior Kate Henrich (Lansdale, Pa.), who entered the week second in the NCAA with 3.5 per game.
The Bulldogs were led by Paula Badali who recorded a hat trick, and goalie Katie Wilbur made 17 saves.
The Pioneers will finish out their five-game homestand when they host Boston University on Wednesday at 7 p.m. MT at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
