Denver Plays American to a 2-2 Draw

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. – University of Denver men’s soccer senior Cole Chapleski (Broomfield, Colo.) and redshirt junior Reid Hukari (Wheat Ridge, Colo.) both scored, helping the Pioneers play American to a 2-2 draw on Sunday afternoon.

“I can’t even begin to say how disappointed we were not to get a win today,” head coach Bobby Muuss said. “We have to find ways to play a full 90 minutes and continue to force our game on our opponents. With that being said, I am proud of the way our guys bounced back after the PK that was given and to get the goal back.”

Chapleski gave the Pioneers (1-2-1) an early lead in the eighth minute with a header off a free kick from junior Brian Hoyt (Tempe, Ariz.).

American (1-2-1) tied it up in the 33rd minute, when Patrick Mehlert scored off assists from Dale Ludwig and Connor Osborne.

Cristobal Soto scored on a penalty kick in the 68th minute to give American the lead, but the Hukari tied it up again less than two minutes later, scoring on a header.

In the game, Denver held a 17-15 advantage in shots and a 7-3 edge in corners.

The Pioneers next head to Saint Louis on Saturday at 6 p.m. MT.
