Oct. 8, 2014 DENVER - The University of Denver men's lacrosse team will host Colorado Lacrosse Day on Saturday at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium and the Diane Wendt Sports Fields. Saturday's tournament is a round-robin format with the field including DU, Colorado, Colorado State, Colorado College, Adams State and BYU. Colorado Lacrosse Day is open to the public, and is free of charge.
Denver will play Colorado in its opening game on Saturday at 10 a.m., followed by games against Colorado State at 11:30 a.m. and BYU at 1 p.m. All three of Denver's games will be played at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
"We are very excited to welcome these five great western lacrosse programs to the University of Denver," head coach Bill Tierney said. "Obviously, for our team, it presents an opportunity for us to face someone other than ourselves in our fall season. Saturday will also serve as an opportunity to better prepare our younger players for next week's Denver Outlaws game. We are thankful for the others agreeing to participate in this great day, and know that Colorado lacrosse fans will enjoy the festive atmosphere of three games going on at once in Peter Barton Stadium and our new Diane Wendt Sports Fields."
The Pioneers will host the 2014 MLL Champion Denver Outlaws in the Sixth Annual Colorado Lacrosse Showcase on Oct. 18 at 1 p.m. MT. Tickets are still available for this event, and admission will be $5. Denver, coming off its third Championship Weekend appearance in the last four years, returns three of its four USILA All-Americans from a team that finished 16-3 a year ago, including seniors Wesley Berg (Coquitlam, B.C.) and Erik Adamson (Anaheim Hills, Calif.). DU's sophomore class includes USILA Honorable Mention All-American Christian Burgdorf (Westfield, N.J.), Inside Lacrosse Freshman of the Year Zach Miller (Steamburg, N.Y.) and ACC Freshman of the Year and Maryland transfer Connor Cannizzaro (Cazenovia, N.Y.). 2014 BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year Ryan LaPlante (Fort Collins, Colo.) is also set to return for his senior season.
Denver's midfield returns senior Sean Cannizzaro (Cazenovia, N.Y.), who has 26 points in 45 career games, with 16 of his 26 coming a year ago. Classmate and long stick midfielder Mike Riis (Carlsbad, Calif.), along with sophomore Tyler Pace (Mission, B.C.) and junior Chris Hampton (Bethesda, Md.) will bolster the Pioneer midfield. Junior attacker Jack Bobzien (Littleton, Colo.) averaged 3.32 points a game a year ago, netting 42 goals in 19 games.
