BOX SCORE
DENVER - On the strength of a natural hat trick from junior forward Quentin Shore (Denver, Colo.) and a 16-save shutout performance from sophomore goaltender Evan Cowley (Evergreen, Colo.), the University of Denver men's hockey team captured a 7-0 victory over the Air Force Academy Falcons on Friday night at Magness Arena. In conjunction with last week's 8-1 win over Colorado College, the Pioneers have now outscored opponents 15-1 over the course of their last two games.
Denver (7-3-0, 3-2-0-0 NCHC) opened the scoring midway through the first period on Friday as senior forward Larkin Jacobson (Sioux City, Iowa) hammered home his first goal of the season from the lower slot. The Pioneers then went up 2-0 at the 6:49 mark of the second period when Shore carried the puck into Air Force territory and proceeded to put on a brief stickhandling clinic, nimbly maneuvering around an opposing defender prior to ripping a wrist shot past AFA goalie Chris Truehl to make Denver's first shorthanded goal of the season of the highlight-reel variety.
Shore scored his second of the night 8:23 later, tipping home a Joey LaLeggia (Burnaby, British Columbia) point shot to put the home team up by three. The 20-year-old center then put the finishing touches on his hat trick in the 38th minute of play, banging a loose puck to the back of Air Force's net during a Denver power play.
Another man-up marker, this one off the stick of Trevor Moore (Thousand Oaks, Calif.), then gave the hosts a five-goal advantage as Friday's match reached the 40 minute mark. A bullet of a wrist shot off the stick of Colorado Avalanche prospect Will Butcher (Sun Prairie, Wis.) put DU up by six early in period number three, with Zac Larazza (Scottsdale, Ariz.) finishing off a tic-tac-toe passing play to record what proved to be the game's final goal midway through regulation's final stanza.
NOTES: Shore's SHG was the first man-down marker by a DU player since Feb. 15, 2014 (Zac Larraza vs. Alaska Anchorage)… Shore's hat trick was the first by a DU player since Nov. 3, 2012 (Chris Knowlton vs. St. Cloud State)… The Pioneers finished the match with a season-high four power play goals on nine opportunities while also going 4-for-4 on the penalty kill… The last time Denver scored four power play goals in a game was Dec. 31, 2010 vs. Northern Michigan.
The Pioneers return to action tomorrow night for a 7:06 p.m. MT home game versus Wisconsin. Information on all DU Hockey ticketing options can be obtained by calling the Daniel L. Ritchie Center Box Office at (303) 871-2336, or by visiting DenverPioneers.com.
