DU Women's Tennis Downs IUPUI

FORT WAYNE, IND.- The No. 68 University of Denver women’s tennis team defeated IUPUI  7-0 at Wildwood Racquet Club in Fort Wayne, Ind., on Saturday.

“It is nice to get another 7-0 victory especially in conference play,” head women’s tennis coach Christian Thompson said. “Maureen Slattery, one of our exceptional freshmen, had an outstanding day not losing a game in her singles or doubles matches.”  

Denver improves to 8-7 overall and 2-0 in conference play following the win, while IUPUI falls to 3-15 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Denver quickly got momentum on its side, claiming three of three doubles matches. In the No. 1 spot, Sonja Radosevic (Miami, Fla.) and Natalie Dunn (Fort Collins, Colo.) beat Julie Brockman and Abbey Neff 8-1. Next, Maureen Slattery (Newport News, Va.) and Kathryn Hughes (Wrexham, Wales) netted a 8-0 victory over Rachael Bridegroom and Rachel Swartwood in the No. 2 spot and Michelle Garpenlov (Tyreso, Sweden) and Caroline Schnell (Greenwood Village, Colo.) took down Bobbi Modesto and Vanessa Whyte 8-1 in the No. 3 spot.

In singles, the Pioneers won six of six matches. Both Slattery (No. 1 spot) and Schnell (No. 2 spot) posted 6-0, 6-0 wins, defeating Bridegroom and Whyte. Hughes won the No. 3 spot, beating Swartwood 6-1, 6-0.

Posting the final three wins of the day were Radosevic, Evy Van Genechten (Antwerp, Belgium) and Charlotte Derbyshire (Stockton, England). Radosevic came out on top over Modesto 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 4 spot, Van Genechten bettered Brockman 6-0, 6-3 in the No. 5 spot and Derbyshire defeated Neff (IUPUI) 6-2, 7-5 in the No. 6 spot.

Denver women’s tennis hits the courts again on Sunday at 7 a.m., MT, to face South Dakota State in Fort Wayne, Ind.
