Denver Women's Tennis Claims Fourth Consecutive 7-0 Win

FORT WAYNE, IND.- The No. 68 University of Denver women’s tennis team defeated South Dakota State  7-0 at Wildwood Racquet Club in Fort Wayne, Ind., on Sunday.

This win marks the final of three conference matches played this weekend and is the fourth consecutive 7-0 victory for the Pioneers.

Denver improves to 9-7 overall and 3-0 in conference play following the win, while South Dakota State falls to 13-7 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

DU claimed the doubles point, taking three of three matches. Netting the first doubles win of the day was the tandem of Kathryn Hughes (Wrexham, Wales) and Maureen Slattery (Newport News, Va.) who defeated Iasmin Rosa and Beatriz Souza 8-1 in the No. 2 spot. Playing in the No. 3 spot, Michelle Garpenlov (Tyreso, Sweden) and Caroline Schnell (Greenwood Village, Colo.) clinched the doubles point for Denver after bettering Ffion Davies and Tacy Haws-Lay 8-3. Sonja Radosevic (Miami, Fla.) and Natalie Dunn (Fort Collins, Colo.) beat Florencia Magni and Jenny Blackburne 8-5 in the final doubles victory of the day.

The Pioneers swept the singles portion, winning six of six matches in straight sets. First, Slattery beat Magni 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 1 spot and Schnell bettered Blackburne 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 2 spot. Solidifying the win for Denver was Radosevic who netted a 6-1, 6-0 win over Davies in the No. 4 spot.

Evy Van Genechten (Antwerp, Belgium), Hughes and Charlotte Derbyshire (Stockton, England) posted the final three wins of the day. Van Genechten was victorious against Souza 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 5 spot, Hughes defeated Rosa 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 3 spot and Derbyshire downed Haws-Lay 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 6 spot.   

Denver women’s tennis is back in action on Wednesday, April 9 when it faces Washington State at 9 a.m., MT, in Pullman, Wash.
