Oct. 12, 2015 San Diego, Calif.- Three players from the University of Denver men's tennis team competed in the San Diego State Fall Invitational this past weekend in San Diego, Calif.
Wyatt Lovera (Miami, Fla.) faced Henry Ji of USC and lost 7-6, 6-2. On Saturday, he played Adrian Cordova of UCSD and won 7-5, 6-1 to secure a spot in the consolation semifinal. Lovera defeated Kawika Lam of the University of Washington 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 before falling to Raul de la Torre of SDSU 6-2, 7-5 in the consolation final.
Junior Yannik James (St. Georges, Grenada) played Hawken in his singles bracket and won 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. He then fell to Rob Bellamy of USC 6-4, 6-2 in the next round. James also defeated Felix Schueller of GCU 6-4, 6-4. Denver native Jesse Ruder-Hook competed in the same bracket against Luca Marquard of UC Irvine and lost 6-2, 6-2. He bounced back with wins over Nicholas Baez of Pepperdine 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 and Adrian Legarreta of GCU 6-4, 6-4. Lastly, he fell to Alexander Roggenkamp of GCU 6-3, 6-4.
James and Ruder-Hook paired up for their doubles match on Friday and beat Scotland Garapedian and Guilherme Galvao of Pepperdine 6-4. The pair then took on Logan Smith and Jake DeVine of USC and won 7-6. On Sunday, James and Ruder-Hook defeated Rob Bellamy and Tanner Smith of USC 7-5 to secure a spot in the championship final. The two student-athletes faced Romain Kalaydijan and Alexandros Araouzos of USD in the championship match and won 6-2.
"Overall it was great for these guys to get a lot of matches in this weekend," assistant coach Drew Eberly said. "The competition level was high and I'm happy the way our guys competed. Jesse and Yannik played some great doubles and anytime you beat teams from USC and USD, it's a good weekend."
The DU Men's Tennis team will have this upcoming weekend off while they prepare for the ITA Regional Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. on Oct. 21-25, 2015.
