Denver Men’s Tennis’ Coats Captures Bedford Cup Singles Title

DU sophomore claims top singles championship after dropping tight tiebreak in doubles final with Robb-Wilcox

USAFA, Colo. – University of Denver men's tennis player Theo Coats won the 2025 Bedford Cup in the Mountains singles title in straight sets to finish off the tournament hosted by the Air Force Academy on Sunday morning.

Coats, who played in both the singles and doubles championship matches, became the first Pioneer to win the top singles prize at the tournament since his former doubles partner Daniel Sancho Arbizu did so in 2022.

Both of Denver's doubles matches on the day went to tiebreakers with freshmen Aaron Beduhn and Tom Noltorp winning their in an extended breaker at 9-7. In the championship match, Coats and graduate student Connor Robb-Wilcox saved early break points and stayed on serve for the entirety of the match before falling in a tight tiebreak, 5-7.

After a short break, Coats retook the court for the top-draw singles final. In both sets, he traded breaks early with his opponent before gaining a late break lead in each. In the first set, he broke for a 5-4 lead and successfully served it out while in the second set, he went up a break at 4-3 in the second of four consecutive games won to secure the title.

Two more Pioneers captures singles wins to finish off the weekend, starting with a dominant performance from Robb-Wilcox that saw the graduate student drop just two games in his second -best result since joining DU a season ago.

DU's two freshmen split their results, both going to 10-point match tiebreaks that ended at 10-7. Noltorp rallied after dropping his first set to capture a tight second set before winning his breaker. Beduhn, too, lost his opening set but battled back to get to the 10-point tiebreak, only to drop it late.

Denver has two weeks off before its next fall tournament, the 2025 ITA Mountain Regional Championships, hosted by UNLV, on October 15-20.
