DENVER - University of Denver men's lacrosse head coach Bill Tierney has signed a contract extension through the 2022 season, DU Vice Chancellor for Athletics and Recreation and Ritchie Center Operations Peg Bradley-Doppes announced on Tuesday.

"This Division is fortunate to have one of the most successful collegiate lacrosse coaches on its staff, preparing the young men that come through our men's lacrosse program to be both great lacrosse student-athletes and great individuals in life after college," Bradley-Doppes said. "Last year's National Championship and our success over the last six seasons have helped grow the brand of our Division and University nationally. It is a well-deserved contract extension for Coach Tierney as he will continue to impact our staff, the city, and the lacrosse community for many years to come."

Tierney will enter his seventh season with the program in 2016, fresh off his record seventh National Championship and the Pioneers' first in men's lacrosse. In 2015, Tierney also became the first NCAA Division I men's lacrosse head coach to win National Championships at two different institutions [6 at Princeton].

"I am humbled, honored and thrilled to accept this extension offered to me by the University of Denver," Tierney said. "There are so many people to thank for what has transpired here in the last six years, particularly Peg Bradley-Doppes our Director of Athletics. She hired me to do a job and has been unwavering in her support of our program as we grew.

"We have a great staff here who coach, mentor, assist and develop our young men in so many ways. Having Matt Brown, my Associate Head Coach, at my side is an especially comforting feeling. Thank you to Chancellor Rebecca Chopp, Peg, Ron Grahame, and all our administrators for their continued confidence in me, as well as my amazing staff for their selfless and tireless efforts on my behalf. I would be remiss if I didn't thank David Morrow and his NewBalance/Warrior team for their generous support in helping make DU the 'Lacrosse Capital of the West.' We can now look forward to our future together with hopes of bringing the City of Denver, our university, my family and friends, and all those who support DU Lacrosse, many more thrilling moments like we experienced last Memorial Day weekend."

Denver has reached Championship Weekend four times in the last five seasons, including the aforementioned 2015 National Championship. Since Tierney's arrival in 2010, the Pioneers have earned berths into the NCAA Tournament in each of his previous six seasons, and have reached at least the NCAA Quarterfinals in the last five campaigns.

In his previous six seasons with the Crimson and Gold, Tierney has amassed an 83-25 record. Overall, Tierney has recorded a mark of 355-118 in 31 seasons as a head coach.

During his first six seasons in Denver, Tierney has also inked a 43-5 record at DU's Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. Since the stadium was built in 2005, the Pioneers have gone 74-14 in one of the only DI lacrosse dedicated facilities in the country. Tierney and the Pioneers currently have the nation's longest active home winning streak at 16 games.

In its NCAA First Round clash with Brown on May 10, Denver recorded its 23rd sellout in the history of the stadium. The Pioneers have sold out 10 of 14 games at Peter Barton in the last two seasons, including setting the new attendance mark of 3,117 on March 28 against Georgetown.

"The culture and atmosphere that has arisen over the last several years at Peter Barton Stadium has been great to see," Tierney said. "Our student, fan and alumni support has been fantastic, and we hope to continue to see the stadium atmosphere grow bigger and bigger in the future. They've truly provided us a home field advantage in the Lacrosse Capital of the West."

After leading the Pioneers to their second Championship Weekend appearance in three years in 2013, Tierney's contract was extended through the 2017 season.
