DENVER - Former University of Denver men's soccer assistant coach Kirk Bast has been named the women's program's volunteer assistant coach ahead of the 2015 campaign, head coach Jeff Hooker announced on Monday.
"It's nice to add another "Head Coach" type to our staff," Hooker said. "Kirk had tremendous success in the high school game, winning eight State Championships and two National Coach of the Year awards. His additional experience as a high school counselor adds another quality facilitator to our staff. It has been a smooth transition incorporating him into our preseason training sessions, as he already came in with a deep knowledge of our program."
Bast coached the men's program from 2001-2007 under former head coaches Chad Aston (2001-06, now an assistant at DC United) and Bobby Muuss (2007, now at Wake Forest).
In his time at DU, Bast helped lead the men's program to a 66-51-13 record. Outside of his time as the men's assistant, Bast has helped out at several University of Denver soccer camps and also spent time coaching both the boys and girls soccer teams at Arapahoe High School. In 1998, Bast was named the High School Girls Large School National Coach of the Year by the NSCAA.
Bast's daughter and former DU Pioneer Kaitlin Bast became the third Pioneer in program history to join the 100 point club, finishing her DU career with 104 points on 41 goals and 22 assists in her 76 CAPS for Hooker's side. Kaitlin Bast helped lead the program to its first Sweet 16 in program history with five game-winning goals and 32 points in her final campaign with the Crimson and Gold.
UP NEXT: The Pioneers will officially open 2015 with an hour trip to Colorado Springs on August 21 to take on Air Force in both programs' opener of the fifth Colorado Cup. DU will wrap up its opening weekend in the second match of a Colorado Cup triple-header at CU's Prentup Field against Colorado State (Aug. 23/1:15 p.m.).
