Nov. 15, 2016 Head University of Denver men's tennis coach Ricardo Rubio announced today that student-athletes Matt Summers and Eric Morris have submitted National Letters of Intent to the program. They will both join the Pioneers as freshmen in 2017.
"We are very excited about Matt and Eric joining our program," says Rubio. "They both have great experience from having played a lot of tennis in their junior careers, including some international tournaments, and we expect them to make an immediate impact on our program as soon as they get to Denver. They both fell in love with our university, campus and team during their visits and we're looking forward to see them in action next fall."
Originally from the United Kingdom, Summers won the 2013 Road to Wimbledon Boys' Doubles Tournament with partner James Davis. He reached the finals of the Uzbekistan G2 ITF Doubles Tournament, also playing with Davis, as well as the Semifinals of Uzbek G3 Singles Tournament earlier this year. The 18-year-old southpaw has won the Kent County Doubles Championship as well as the U14 Singles Championship and was twice a Singles Finalist in both the U16 and U18 divisions during his junior career. He was also a National County Cup champion in both 2012 and 2014.
The reigning Austin Super Champ Winter Excellence (Boys, 18) champion, Morris has won three elite doubles titles in his home state of Texas this past calendar year. He was a semifinalist at the 2015 Junior ITF Grass Court Championships in Philadelphia and made it to the quarterfinals of last year's Winter Nationals in Scottsdale, Ariz. The 18-year-old righty helped the RTC Rebels win the 18U Advanced title at the 2015 Junior USTA National Championships and has been ranked among the Top 10 players for his age group in Texas the last four years.
