Dec. 15, 2016 Head University of Denver men's tennis coach Ricardo Rubio announced today that senior DU student-athletes Alex Gasson (Alton, United Kingdom) and Diogo Rocha (Lisbon, Portugal) have been named co-captains for the Pioneers' upcoming season.
"Diogo and Alex have been around the program for three years now - they know the competition, they know what Drew (Eberly) and I expect out of our student-athletes and they are both highly-respected within our team," says Rubio. "Not only they are two of our best players, they do things the right way both on and off the court. They have different personalities that complement each other well and they are great role models and ambassadors for our program."
Gasson, 22, is coming off of back-to-back All-Summit League Team nods. He posted an impressive 54-25 singles record during his first three seasons at DU and went 6-3 during this year's fall schedule. In doubles play, Gasson and partner Yannik James (St. Georges. Grenada) were ranked 42nd in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association in advance of the autumn portion of this season's ITA schedule. Team James/Gasson won the Doubles Championship at the 2016 USTA/ITA Division I Mountain Regional in October and competed at the 2016 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in New York last month.
Rocha, 22, was ranked No. 116 by the ITA in their pre-season rankings after amassing a singles record of 62-19 over the course of his first three seasons at Denver. The reigning Summit League Player of the Year, Rocha competed at several high-profile events this fall including the Oracle ITA Masters where he made it to quarterfinals. He also made it to the Round of 16 in the consolation draw of the 2016 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American in Oklahoma.
