April 29, 2016 BIG EAST Tournament Tickets | 2016 Schedule
WASHINGTON - [1/1] University of Denver sophomore FOGO Trevor Baptiste (Denville, N.J.), junior attackman Connor Cannizzaro (Cazenovia, N.Y.) and junior midfielder Zach Miller (Steamburg, N.Y.) have all three been named Tewaaraton Award nominees, the committee announced on Friday night. The Pioneers are one of three programs on the 25-player list to have three nominees (Brown and Notre Dame).
Baptiste and Cannizzaro were named nominees for the second-consecutive year on Friday.
A USILA First Team All-America selection a year ago, Baptiste is 511-for-749 (.682) in his career from the faceoff dot, including 201-of-293 (.686) in 2016. Baptiste has double-digit faceoff wins in all 31 of his collegiate games, 15+ faceoff wins in 22 career games (eight in 2016) and 20+ faceoff wins in eight career games (four in 2016). The Denville, N.J., is first in active faceoff winning percentage (.682), fifth in active faceoff wins (511) and first in ground balls per game (8.2). In 2015, Baptiste set the record for faceoff wins by a freshman at 310, a mark that was also good for fourth in the NCAA Division I single-season record books. Baptiste is the only FOGO and one of three sophomores named a Tewaaraton nominee.
Cannizzaro leads the top ranked Pioneers in points with 56 on a team-high 36 goals and 20 assists. A 2015 USILA First Team All-America pick, Cannizzaro has seven hat tricks and a sock trick in 2016. The Denver attackman is currently sixth in points-per game at 4.67 and seventh in goals per game at 3.0. DU's leading scorer is 14th on the career active points list (180) and 11th on the active goals list at 119. In just 31 games with the program, Cannizzaro is seventh in the DU record book in points (146), seventh in goals (93) and seventh in man-up goals (14).
An NCAA All-Tournament Team selection in 2015, Miller leads Denver's midfield with 18 goals, including late fourth-quarter game-tying goals at [9/10] North Carolina (:09 left in regulation) and at [16/18] Villanova (3:07 in regulation) and the game-winning goal at [2/1] Notre Dame (2:02 left in OT). Miller has 14 assists to bring his point total for 2016 up to 32, the third-highest on the team. A 2015 USILA Third-Team All-America selection, Miller is fifth on DU's career points list (150), 10th on the career goals list (82) and fourth on the career assists list (68). Miller is one of five midfielders, and Miller and Cannizzaro are two of six juniors named to the list.
Five men's and five women's finalists will be announced on May 12 and invited to the ceremony. The Tewaaraton Award Ceremony will be held in Washington, D.C., on June 2, 2016, at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian.
