Where are They Now: Mackenzie Jones

Sept. 1, 2016

Every week after home games during the 2016 Denver men's and women's soccer season, DenverPioneers.com will check in with a former Pioneer soccer player:

Mackenzie Jones (Snyder) - Goalkeeper - Class of 2009

Quick Bio: Mackenzie Jones (Snyder) made 55 career appearances for the Pioneers, starting in 46 of those matches, and posting a 30-8-5 record with 18 shutouts. Jones made 159 saves on her way to a 0.68 goals against average. Jones made two saves in Denver's 2-0 shutout the last time the Pioneers played Montana (last Sunday's opponent) in September of 2008.

Where are you now/What are you doing?:

Still live in Denver and only about 2 miles away from campus (never ventured very far!). Over the past year I made the transition from Commercial Real Estate into Residential. I am really enjoying it and love helping my clients find the home of their dreams!

Last time you touched a soccer ball/Where?:

About 2 months ago playing a game of 1v1 with my nephew in the backyard. Have not played in a real game or competitively in about 4 years.

When's the last time you were back on campus? What's the biggest change to campus since you graduated?:

I go back to campus often. My husband was on the men's soccer team so we try to attend the men's and women's games as often as we can. There have been so many changes to the DU campus since I graduated that I couldn't just name one thing! The new athletic training center and practice fields are amazing. The library was totally revamped and there are a number of new buildings going up right now. The campus has never looked more beautiful and I couldn't be more proud to be a DU Pioneer.

Highlight/favorite soccer memory from your time at DU:

Making the NCAA Tournament provided some of my fondest memories of soccer at DU. We worked so hard to win our conference tournament every year in order to make the NCAA Tournament, and getting there showed that all of our hard work and determination was paying off.

Favorite non-soccer memory from your time at DU:

All of the wonderful people I met at DU that I am still very good friends with to this day!

Your favorite Jeff Hooker story/saying:

My favorite memories of Jeff were his halftime speeches. Typically they were very encouraging and laid out a game plan for the rest of the game. However, every once in a while when we were playing very poorly we would get a serious talking to!

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?:

We are pregnant with our first baby right now so I would imagine we are still living in Denver with at-least two kids (who ideally play soccer)! My husband and I will both be successful in our respective careers and we will be raising kind and thoughtful children. We most definitely will still be attending and supporting the DU sports programs!

Biggest adjustment to life after graduation? What advice do you have for the current Pioneers about life after college?:

Not having homework is awesome but adjusting to the real world without athletics can be tough. Typically your first job is not ideal or your favorite. However, it is always a great learning experience and will set you up for the rest of your career. So work hard at it and enjoy it as much as you can because it won't be a forever thing! I also recommend doing some extra-curricular activities such as joining a softball, or flag football league. Not playing a sport can be a tough adjustment for many college athletes so playing some fun non-competitive sports can help ease that transition.
