Sept. 16, 2016 The Denver men's tennis team opened up the fall portion of its schedule on Friday, with Pioneers Yannik James, Alex Gasson, Sean Huynh and Wyatt Lovera all competing at the Midland Invitational in Midland, Texas.
Gasson earned three-set wins over Jackson Cobb (Texas Tech: 6-3, 3-6, 6-2) and Henry Adams (Abilene Christian: 6-7, 6-3, 6-3) while James defeated Jhonathan Gonzalez (UTA - Texas Arlington: 7-5, 6-1) in straight sets following a first round bye. James will face Texas' Colin Markes on Saturday morning in Round 3 action while Gasson will face Olle Thestrup from Auburn.
Meanwhile, after falling to Ferran Calvo (Tyler Junior College), Lovera defeated Pedro Platzeck (Boise State: 6-3, 6-1) in a second round consolation match. Huynh also earned a victory in his second round consolation match, downing Oliver Plaskett (Arizona: 6-3, 7-6) in straight sets after coming up short against Wichita State's Eddie Stoica in his first match as a Pioneer.
The Midland Invitational continues on Saturday; doubles play was suspended on Friday due to bad weather. Several members of the Pioneers will also be competing at the MSU Denver Invitational this weekend at the Regency Athletic Complex: Jesse Ruder-Hook, Zach Fryer, Ignatius Castellino and Pedro Fernandez Del Valle.
